Carbs--- Which setup to use?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Action Girl, Oct 25, 2004.

  1. Ok gang,

    Need some input here...

I scored an old edelbrock dual carb intake for Faye's new engine. I've got a bunch of carb options and need to settle on one so I can get this last piece assembled.

    Here's what a have...

1 new holley 2-barrel progressive carb
1 freshly rebuilt Rochester single (off of the old engine)
2 Carter YF's single that came with the manifold (and linkage)

The Carters are in rough shape and need a major cleaning and rebuild. The Holley progressive is brand new and has a heated water choke. The Rochester was working like a champ when I pulled it.

Here's the three options, as I see it.

#1 Get a second rebuilt Rochester single
#2 Get a second rebuilt Holley double with electric choke and a conversion kit for the one I have to convert it to electric choke also
    #3 Rebuild the Carters

I'm not terribly worried about the linkage for the rochesters or Holley's. My main concern is the best performance.

What do you guys and gals think?

    Stacey

I would rebuild and match the Carters,Stacey. Besides being more"period correct",they are simple to tune, and dead reliable. With your mildly modified engine, you would be hard pressed,to notice a diffrence in performance,if any.Unless the Carters are beyond rebuilding, use them. My $.002 Sparky

  3. Thanks! I have another question

The carters I have appear to be identical. They've got two numbers on them, one that is raised near the base, another that is stamped on a lip along the side of the float bowl (outside). On my carbs, the raised numbers match and the stamped numbers don't... Which do I use with respect finding a kit if we go that route?

Stacey,According to my MOTORS Manual, use the numbers on the bases for the ID #'s,if the tag is missing in the bowl covers. If you give me both serts of numbers,I can refrence them to Carter kit numbers, then you can cross refrence them,by a real autoparts store(O'rilley's,NAPA,etc.) I am anxiously awaiting your reply [IMG] sparky

  5. Sadly,

I'm not at the garage. Dad's gonna write the numbers down and gimme a call. I sorta answered my own question and found out the the stamped number is the one I need. I'm fairly certain that one of them is a 787SB the other one is 3 numbers followed by an S. I'll get the exact numbers and PM them to you. Like I said, other than the different numbers, they appear identical.

    THANKS!

  6. I just switched from the Rochester 1bbls to the Carter-Webber progressive 2bbls and I love them. This is on a 111,000 mile daily driver, 1961 Chevy C10 pickup.-MIKE

    Stacey,
Car Quest Auto Parts part # 121A on the rebuild kits for the Carters. You can probably cross ref. if you don't have a Car Quest around. I'm runnin the Carters on an Edelbrock on my 216 and really like them. Better than the Rochs. in my opinion.
