I have a 63 Valiant with a slant 6 and a Holley single barrel that developed a leak at the bowl. I searched for a new gasket and came up empty so I bought a sheet of Felpro gasket material to make my own. I cut and installed it and it was sealing fine for about an hour. It started seaping and I found that the bottom screw had worked itself loose while I had the car idling. I tightened it and again it was fine for a few hours but then started leaking again. This time was w/o the engine running. Where did I go wrong here?
Look at the bowl and the carb body mounting surfaces. They usually got overtightened and warped the mounting ears. I've double gasketed them and had that work or try to file things flat again.
double gasket it and youll have twice the leak, ive put a little teflon tape on the threads to tighten them up .rebuild kits are available
Carb was rebuilt a few months ago and I didnt want to buy one just for the one gasket. Im going to check the bowl and carb surface with a straight edge and see if somethings bent or worped and go from there
Lild, you also need to check to se if any of the threads have begun to " pull ". This will create a small raised burr, and the gasket will not be allowed to seat 100% around the screw hole opening. Take a small chamfer tool and by hand or a very slow drill motor, put ever the slightest chamfer on the opening for the screw holes. TR
