The 235 in my 37 Chevy p/u has issues and thinking about a vintage V8 swap and a friend said he had a 64 Buick 300,I might see if I can talk him out of it and I know nothing about these motors so I need some education about them.
neat old engine, not much available for performance. Some of them had aluminum heads. The rear of the engine looks like the later BOP so you can find a transmission pretty easy, or use the 2 speed SP300 it came with.
If thats the aluminum head one There good runners My dad had one in his 66 boat,Great motor. iF it has the aluminum heads and 4 barrel your home free ,,,,,you can put a gearshift but behind it you can only use the 2 speed hp 215 and 239 with high compression heads,,,,
the tooling for that motor was bought from buick by range rover and they dind t change much internally.i am not and expert on this motors but i believe there is one towo internert sites for them./ googleit.
The Buick 300 grew from the Buick 215 V8, which was all aluminum. The 64 300 was cast iron block, aluminum heads. The 65 and 66 300s had cast iron heads also. Like squirrel said, good engine, but no performance parts for them.If you want a lot of horsepower, look elsewhere......
Great engine, I had one in my 64 Buick LeSabre Convertible. Aluminum heads with a four barrel. Get it and put it in....it will look neat and run good!
I think that a very limited amount of speed parts are available for this 300....Isky used to list cam kits and Egge makes stock and hi-compression pistons...not sure about headers or intakes....If you scored a four bbl. intake, that's as good as it gets.....with a two bbl. they still run great.
If it pulled a land yacht like a LeSabre convertible around then it must have enough grunt for just about anything! (No offense intended - I LOVE big-ass luxury convertibles and have owned several.)
I grew up riding in and learned to drive on a couple of '67 Buicks with the 340 (same basic design I believe) They were both great engines. Ran forever with nothing more than a valve job on one. Both of them still ran good when Dad got rid of them
We had one in a 64 Skylark and am trying to remember, wasn't the oil pump external on the front of the block ? Reason I ask is it might present a little clearance issue in a swap. It was in the 70's we owned it, so I might be wrong as it has been so long. Don
Yeah, the oil pump sticks out of the front cover. And the filter, too. There are some different ones available to help clearance issues. The 300 is pretty similar to the 225 V6, and the later 231 (3.8) V6. Notice that 225 is three quarters of 300.
