Use some kind of bushing as a drill guide to drill broken bolt and use the time honored EZ-Out extractor... I didn't see anything out of the ordinary.
You know they come out easy, the dang parts are settin on the bench. Try that in a very limited space under the hood.
I had a guy I know that owns a shop ask me to look at a busted bolt on a late model Mopar truck exhaust manifold. Long story made short, the manifold winds up at my house strapped to an angle plate on the mill to be drilled out. Standing on your head with limited access is how most busted bolts are located. IMHO only a hack uses an adjustable wrench to work a tap....
Well I think it's an ok video as it is useful to the young ones on the forum who may not have this knowledge or experience.
Yes, you are right, but folks who have been around the block a couple of times will tell you, in real life there is usually a lot more to dealing with what this video shows as simple and easy. Generally, when something is broke in a threaded hole it usually means it is stuck and broke for a reason. This video makes light work of what is supposed to be a stuck bolt, yet they all come out so easy. However, the philosophy is worth noting and keeping in the memory bank for that particular situation.
working at a machine shop and knowing the hell it is to remove an easy out, I've never tried one. always found alternative ways. that deep recess looks tough though.
Yep, Easy Outs are not my friends and when they break good luck. I like the left hand twist drill bits and of course the welding nuts to the problem area if possible. But I know my limits and sometimes off to the machine shop I go. I'm hesitating removing smog type exhaust manifolds on an ot truck and replacing with non-smog because I know I'll brobably break a bolt!
Well, despite all the negative comments, I like the idea of the bolt with the hole in the center, if for no other reason than to be able to drill out a broken stud without the hole getting off center. I'm gonna make up a set today.
Me too. When friends would call and say they broke a bolt and wanted me to get it out I would tell them if they already broke an EZ-out to take it somewhere else. If they broke a bolt and brought it straight to me without screwing it up I could help them.
"easier to fix the damage created by mother nature, than the damage created by the last mother ' that worked on it"
They are a great idea. I actually came up with that idea myself a few years back and made up a set of every size from 1/4 through 5/8. They need to be made on a lathe though so you can be sure the hole is in the exact center.
Yeah, I made up a few on the lathe today. Now that I have them ready, it's a pretty sure thing I'll never need them.
