I started a thread about the '46 which took a right turn towards Wendover. So I figured I'd separate the two. Here we go.... This was our (myself and Anna's)trip to and from Speedweek this year. The fact that the '46 made the trip back to Oregon from LA without any major events sealed the deal for the Bonneville trip. Needed to fix the wipers and slow down the loss of oil. Also the flex pipe exhaust needed some work to it was cracking a bit. Then while doing the rear main, I smashed it on the lift. Not a bad list considering... Fast forward to Bonneville trip. First night pics camping at the warm spring by the opal mines in Nevada off of 140. The smoke from the fires made for some beautiful sunsets.
Nothing but but smooth sailing till the next stop. A few pics from the next evening. This spot was just outside of Winnemucca if I remember correctly. 4 or 5 miles down a smooth gravel road. The car likes the gravel roads too. Rolls like a champ. Nice, free spot. Jack rabbits are cool little dudes.
This guy passed us like we were standing still on our way to Austin, NV for the Alviso Roadsters BBQ. Nice to see rollin' strong in the desert.
Stopped in Winnemucca for a couple cold ones at the Cheers Bar, and a walk in the heat. The Winnemucca Motel is for sale. Some hot rodder should by it. Great place to stop.
We rolled onto Austin. Riding in this cloud compared to the hard miles in the Model T put us ahead of schedule a full day so we set up camp at the Bob Scott campground just above Austin on Hiway 50. Has anybody noticed a pattern to the madness? I like it when things are simple, even if it's temporary like vacations. Drive, eat, drive, set up camp, drink, drink more, sleep, repeat.
At the campground we met fellow hot roller, Lou. Sorry no pics of Lou but hears his sweet Stu. pickup. We rolled into Austin to have a look around town.... Sure as shit, the sun set with the smokey sky and it looked bitchin'. You can see one of the fires burning in the pic. Had a little rain, which kept things coooool.
The next morning started out out mellow. I found a day old paper in the trash and drank some coffee in the great outdoors. Think of it as the calm before the storm cuz when we get to town.....
My wife and I made the Bonneville trip this year as well. We didn't get to take a cool, H.A.M.B. friendly car, but it was still a life-long dream come true. We met a couple of red hats there that took the time to teach us Rookies about the ropes of high speed racing. Monte Wolfe own the Clip Joint and has a 200mph plus record and Larry Mayfield. Larry owns the worlds fastest Sunbeam at over 200 as well....coupla real nice guys...
You'll meet the nicest folks out there. Gonna' have to get that rpu ready for next year perhaps. I need to post more of the trip.....here goes Here's roughly the bunch of Alviso Roadster's that did the drive to Bonneville. Bright and early some feelin' a little rough from from the night before, some fresh as a daisy. I was not fresh as a daisy.
So the deal from Austin to Wendover is take Hiway 50 through Eureka to Ely then shoot North on 93 or 95, I forget right now. Nice drive but the last 100 miles or so is the longest drive ever. I think it's because you know your next stop is Wendover, and all Hell is gonna' brake loose.! These are randoms taken in Eureka, NV. Nice place to stop and stretch yer legs, and get gas.
The stop in Ely is always a good one, food, refreshments, more gas. And a sidewalk of stars. The 99 cent margarita is pretty good.
The last leg onto Wendover went smoothly. Did get some rain and was looking like things might be a bit wet in Wendover when we get there. We showed up in Wendover just after the rain.
The trip home.. me fixin' busted old car, little girl with hella rifles and unibrow, boner-glyphics, Ray Salsbury's place in Austin, NV
