This is an odd-ball request... I've managed to lose the 4 short bolts that hold the shifter on my old BW T-5 tranny and nothing I have in my stash fits. Duh! It looks to be 5/16ths fine thread. Is there a tool that can give me the right thread size? Thanks!
Usually I just find a bolt I think will work and screw it in. If the diameter or pitch is not right, it won't go.
Not that I've ever seen. Unless you have an expensive metrology gauge set. A step thread gauge would be too hard to read in that size hole. If your best guess 5/16ths. Then I'd just go to the nearest hardware and buy one of every thread count per inch in the fine thread area. It may very well be metric.
get one of these from Dorman , every guy that works on cars should have the tools and ability to check for thread size part # 415-103
Available from Summit: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/rnb-415-103?seid=srese1&gclid=CJG8puDl48wCFclkhgodURoKgQ And Advance Auto, about $25.
That would be proportional...However, some are available with 12mm hex heads, (more 'costly' imports came with those, usually in 'space-saving' places) German suppliers (VW, Porsche, BMW dealers) are BEST, when you have the choice...
see if one of the other bolts off the tranny will fit, then take that to the hardware store to match up.
M8x20, we only add the pitch when it's "odd". Regular pitch is 1.25 13 mm head 1/2 is 12.8 mm. Japanese cars are often fine aka. 1.0 And has a 14 mm head. 8.8 is grade 6 hardware 10.9 is grade 8 hardware That hex head matte black bolts at grade 8. There is no lines on the head of a Metric bolt, for those who care.
When in doubt I use a thread tap from my tap and die set to get the correct size then go to Ace Hardware and buy the bolts.
