I have my vacuum advance hooked up to the venturi vacuum port on the Holley, isn't that correct? Only sees vacuum when the throttle opens? And the bottom vacuum port is constant manifold vacuum? Checked my float levels and they are good. Retarded the timing a little more, didn't put the light on it, but it runs better at no point has it ever kicked back like it was too fast in time. Weird. I usually advance until it drags on start up, and retard it until it stops. Not the case here. Oh well

 

Most hook the vacuum advance to manifold vacuum.
I don't run one, but it's a race car.

 

But if you do, it'll fully advance at idle, correct?

 

That is correct, but at WOT it drops back to zero so you only have mechanical advance . So when you set your total timing do it with the vacuum advance disconnected. This will give you your true reading at WOT. You will need a timing tape on the dampner or a dial back timing light. With the light hooked up slowly rev the engine until you see it stop advancing , record that number it will be your total advance. You can play with weights , springs and length of advance slots in the distributor. Its really kinda fun once you get it dialed in.

 

Little engines tend to like more total maybe as much as 42 degrees... strokers not so much, maybe as little as 32.
