Ok, with my 51 Chevy sold, I have been on the hunt for a new project. One of the cars I found is a 60 Chevy. It currently has a small block and a 700R4 trans. I like the car, but I like my cars fast also. So, if this deal goes through, I would to build a motor with a little more grunt, well, a lot more grunt. I was thinking a 454, or a stroker 468. So, is it a major deal switching from a small block to a big block in this thing?
depending on how much power you put in front of that 700r4, you may need to have the tranny gone through at some point. depending on how radical you want to go with the motor, the GM crate motors may be the way to gone, unless you can get a running 454 donor from another car/truck. or you could go original and put a pumped 348 W head in it, which was the "big block" for that year.
I wouldn't put a 700 behind a big block unless the trans was built for it (and has a warranty) some folks do it and it works out okay.....
howzabout a muncie? or t-10? in front of some 4.11 to 4.88 gears? but then the big block needs to be something besides mild
You may also want to upgrade the driveshaft carrier bearing to one of the ones the lowrider guys use. they sell a pretty good one at an ebay store. just search for impala driveshaft bearing.
Yep, it will fit an bolt to the SBC mounts. A 468 is not a stroker, it is simply a 0.060 overbored 454 (stock 454 bore is 4.250 and +0.060 is 4.310). I second the 700R4 needs to be built for the BBC. I have a 700R4 in my 38 with 454, it has broke one trans so far, and second one is holding up.
oh, that has a boring automatic in it....behind a mild blown 454. The 61 I'm slowly building is getting a 427/muncie/4.88
How 'bout a TH400 behind a 468. My '31 Plymouth has a 468 (.060 over 454) and a beefed up TH400 with a 3000 RPM stall convertor and I love it. I'm running a B&M trans cooler with a motorcycle fan to keep the trans cool. I got the engine block out of a '78 GMC truck. The only thing special about a TH400 is that you need to make a "kickdown switch" -- which is just a switch that connects when you hit close to full throttle -- it tells the trans to downshift when you floor it. I don't know much about newer transmissions, but I love TH400s in anything with tons of torque. A stock 454 has close to 500 foot pounds of torque.
Don't worry about the trans you won't keep the Carrier bearing in it long enough to hit second, but serious now, build a one piece driveshaft and update the 700's sun shell, and a few other things, oh and don't forget the 9" Ford rear, oh hell just build a tube chassis for it, yes I did all of this but stopped at the tube chassis. you should see the car flex with sticky slicks on it...very cool!
