Hot Rods BIG and little tires

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Sep 20, 2017.

  1. I am one of those guys that likes the big & little tire stagger on hot rods, especially on the earlier cars & trucks, most of the time I use a wider wheel to enhance the look, hiboy's or full fender-ed.

I suppose most customs go with the same size front and rear.

    What's your thoughts? HRP

  2. I recall looking at pics of mid '60s customs ( the cars were '64 vintage so I am guessing mid '60s) from Connecticut that were running bigger times on the rear than the front, not as drastic as say a M/T tired car from the '70s but still bigger than what we normally see on say a '50s style custom.

My '46 coupe treaded a fine line between custom and hot rod, it was a later '50s or earlier '60s build and it had 8.00s and 6.00s on it when I got it. The wheels were all the same width.

On a jalopy I still lean toward fats and skinnies. But I have always been more of a rodder than a custom guy.

    My 40 has 8.20- 15's on the rear and 5.90's up front[IMG]

My impala has 7.50-14 all around[IMG]

My corvette has 6.70-15 all around[IMG]

Both 55's run same all around. The hardtop has 6.70-15, and the sedan runs 7.50-14[IMG][IMG]

I like the big & little tire look on the hot rods, with wider wheels. Custom cars I like the same size tires with wider wheels. And then the original restored classic, I'll go with the tire & wheel look that came with the car. The right tires & wheels can really make the look of the car.

For a Hot Rod, IMO, the big & little tire set up is a huge dynamic, when a good rake is needed. A good combo is hard to ignore.

Anyone trying to buy big and little radial tires right now. I'm looking for some big (tall) but not too wide for the rear of a hiboy.....6" wide rims. The 215-85R-16 tires are just about perfect, but they are hard to find in load range "D" or better yet "C"...... 90% are load range "E". Found some on the Simple Tire website.....anyone deal with them? Any other ideas? I'm looking for 30" or better yet 31" tall tires with not too aggressive of a tread with a somewhat plain sidewall.
I say right now, because the o-ring tires are taking over and the tall sidewall tires are being discontinued daily!

While current restrictions limit the posting of my later model inventory I can share this one, old pic before I tore it down for paint. 31" tall cheaters on 16"X 8" rims and 15" coker American classics up front on 15" X 5.5"

And the Nova, F 14" up front and G14":s out back.

I'm running 255/60/15's on the rear and 215/60/15 on the front of the Linc. The 215's are a little short on the front, so I'll probably step up to a 225 next time, and will probably step up to a 265/60 on the rear. That is, if I can find them, like a boner said, tires with a side wall and a decent tread width are getting harder to find, especially in 14" and 15". Hope to get another year or two out of mine before I have to buy any.

I'd post a pic of the car, but too many would bitch about the later style aftermarket wheels, so I'll be respectful of the cut off date and not do it.

On a hot rod, big tires go on the back.

On my Merc, the big tires were on the front, the rears were slightly smaller.
