I have searched the forums for this theme and wanted to ask a few opinions on this topic. I may be starting a 40 Coupe Ute project this year,( with luck a 39 in fall) and am kind of torn on color. They will both be built as Deluxe models. Both are body shells, so they are not nut and bolt restos.
I know black is always acceptable, as are the Garnet Maroon, Claret Maroon and Mandrin Maroon factory colors.

I know that the color I want is all I need to worry about, but I think certain cars look better with specific colors. Big cars, well in this case Fat Fendered, look better with the right color. Its about proportions.

The above color is perfect. That coupe is georgous. Black is always great also. Both colors really accentuate the beautiful lines of the 40 Ford.
Don't be tempted to do the two tone with different color fenders that was an option back in 1940.

Tim (Old Scrounger) has done them all and his Cloud Mist Gray seems to be a big hit on the West Coast. The 40 is 75 display at the GNRS had every color you could think of and the CMG was the favorite.

Here is a line up of the most popular colors. Black, CMG, Maroon, Black with flames.

  8. I guess the color depends on the look you are trying to achieve. With that unique Ute body, are you going for a more commercial use look, HotRod (Traditional, Vintage or Modern), Custom, stockish...? See if you can get someone to photochop a few colors onto an existing Ute pic for you. You could also do a coloring book type drawing and break out some color pencils/markers, etc... and do up several versions. Whatever you do, have a good time with it and make it your own!

Agreed, two toning on some cars is like you gave up. Had a late friend that did his 40 Coupe in Gold. Unfortunately something happened and the fenders got dinged by the hood. That's when the car got flames.

The allure of Mandrin Maroon is obvious. I did black on my 32 and never second guessed the choice. But its a different size car and a different look. I am doing gold on a hi boy roadster I am doing now, and the color is kicking my but in regards to painting it. Down to the body and will do that once the doors are fit. Really need to see it outside more in the sun to see if I am satisfied with the color choice.

Agreed again. I think once I see a body on a frame, and I see the dimensions, the gate area always looks huge, I can dial it in. May even print off a sketch on to clear overhead sheets and lay that over paint samples and look at it in good light.

I am really trying to stay away from a streetroddy thing, bolt in Mustang 2 is very appealing for a ride and convenience standpoint, especially with some of the reasonable prices out there. I have had the Chassis Engineering Bolt in M2 under my 39 Chevy and enjoyed it for the ride height and comfort. I did have the stock front axle and leafs under it for a few years until I could afford the IFS.

I know 40s work well with the original configuration up front..

The other challenge in my head is choice of engine. I really hate to do the same thing twice. I do not want to do a SBC. If I do another flattie it will get a 5 speed. That extra geer would be nice. I have a Y block/T10 for my 32 Tub to use, and have a Non Hamb Friendly 429 in the roadster I am building now. 302C and 351C are the national engine of Fords in Australia, well that is accept when they have the Straight 6.

Well I have time to sort it out.

Here is the color on my '40. If I was going to repaint, I think I would go a little more towards a "root beer. \'40 coupe 1.jpg

Black with flames on the front fenders and hood is the only color for 39-40 Fords

I disagree, I just bolted the fenders and running boards on my pickup and the soft yellow just made the detail and curves pop for me. Most any color looks good on a 40';s but maybe orange. Always want to do one in the Washington blue.

I did it in the 70's and started a trend then. Two tone blue. But not so much today.

I painted mine a Chrysler black cherry, very similar to the black cherry pictured earlier. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. It was that or black, and I figured I'd seen enough black ones.

I like two tone on the trucks, not so much on the cars. Although MJ's two tone blue is a real "eye catcher".

  29. NO 2 TONE!!!!!!!!
2 tone is ONLY for Model A's
But then all black A's are best.
    Man I've become so opinionated!!
