Forgot to mark the carrier halves when I stripped this banjo rear . What is the worst that can happen? Any tips on solving placement?

Well you have a 1 in 4 chance of getting it right... or look at colors, markings that might indicate the way it was before. The cross bar may not matter.

You might also put the two halves together, and see if your fingernail can catch on the spider gear machined surface halves. Maybe one position over another with show better fitment. If in all 4 positions it seems seamless, maybe no harm?

I agree, a really close examination may show some kinda witness mark, and if not it must be close to new!

bct: Just a reminder. DO NOT use a tap to clean out the threads in the banjo center housing as they are a special class of fit to prevent leaks.

I even have my cross pin inverted, but it's not final assembly. 20250720_144304.jpg

  10. Look close for any kind of matching stains, discoloration, or nicks; there should be something that stands out. Kinda like sorting unmarked main caps.

Someone is smarter than me. The top punch mark isn't entirely obvious but the parts mate together so well in this position that I can lift the top half and the bottom sticks.

  13. It's probably just me. But every time I see the words "Banjo Mistake" scroll up onscreen I think about the movie "Deliverance".

I've never worked on one but I know of two cars that had the ring gear on the wrong side when reassembled. Three reverses and one forward gear is the result.

Could this be a match for stain alignment?

    That's not the parting line.

  17. My older brother had a '28 A Tudor that he used as a DD for a spell. For some reason he had the rear axle apart, maybe to fix a bearing problem or some other such issue. It all had to be reassembled to sell the car before he left soon for boot camp. He got it back together just in time, but ended up with 3 speeds in reverse and 1 speed forward. Big brother reported to Ft. Campbell on time. And dad and I spent a few days in the driveway getting the ring gear flipped over to the other side of the pinion and the car went away shortly after.

No, that's not his part. It's mine to show an example. And, that's not the parting line, where my greasy thumb print
