Meh, Shitcan the top, put a Duvall windshield on it, get some Brookville doors, paint that thing shiny black and put steelies on it and you'd have a hard time not fitting in with the rest of the '32 roadster crowds. Looks better than many of the 90's heartbeat pink and baby blue shit. It does have a great engine in it. Fuck at least it's not Red. Guys different for sure. But hey he's building it for real. Honestly in its current state it's a goofy mess, but it's his goofy mess. - Tim
Now I'm worried.......... he's north of Oak Island. If that drilling rig hits the junk yard he has been pulling stuff out of there's going to be a lot of pissed TV viewers.
Yeah, I watched a few shows, in my opinion, he's a hacker. Discovery found him, he's entertaining, got no tools, no real talent as far as I'm concerned, and being on tv, shows the public some entertainment. There's no plan when he starts a car, except in his head, no consideration for dimension, or for how to make a car go around corners and stop. He makes for good tv, hope he makes a little money from his efforts....
Yes, I tend to agree, but he seems to be marching to his own drum and smiling all the way. I think we should leave him to it, and try and concentrate on the beat of our drum.
I have to say that I’m a fan and most importantly, an admirer of Chad’s. Sure, some of his builds were kinda out there, but so were some of the cars built by the legends of the custom world. What I like about Chad is his positive attitude and that he can create a custom vehicle from just some old junk that he’s found laying around. He doesn’t use any fancy tools, just stuff he makes himself. Now as far this car is concerned, it started out as a 32 heavy truck - which is why it seems so large. Chad used the chassis, the cowl, and the grill shell. He fabricated the rear quarters - I believe they’re model A that were made to fit. The doors are modified ‘42 Plymouth units. All this is powered by a Buick nailhead. You want a “traditional” hot rod? Well it don’t get much more old school than this. Chad lives in Nova Scotia, not So Cal so finding rust free cars is a bit more of a challenge for him. Personally, I think that Chad is in the same class as the builders of old. He doesn’t try to emulate or recreate traditional cars, he just builds hot rods and customs with what he has at hand and they are what they are.
Looks like the "trailer park" special, If a mullet was ever embraced in a car build, this is it. Damn top looks like a mullet... I can see the natural ice cans already on the floorboard.
We're all car people here. We all appreciate builds, some more than others..but people "building" Hot Rods and Customs and sharing them are what we're about. People who use what they have available, vs ordering pre-made bolt on parts generally get more respect here (rightfully so). Seems he fits right in, like his builds or not. I don't have a TV show, with added income/recognition coming in from it as I hack away on my builds..some respect is deserved..or is it jealousy from some on here? Is he a bit "different" ?..maybe, so what?
Right? I really like his message, his positive outlook and creativity. Sometimes I do question his taste, but, people may question mine too.
Honestly, I'm biting my lip in terms of commentary on this guy's builds. I'll just say I'm not a fan and leave it at that. If there is one positive I can glean from his show, is that it puts custom cars and hot rods into the spotlight when other automotive TV shows focus mainly on muscle cars, restomods and pro-touring style. Perhaps he could serve as an entry-point to the traditional genre for folks who were otherwise unaware. Then those folks could expand their knowledge base to include better, classic builders like Winfield, Watson, Barris, etc., and modern builders like Cole Foster, Troy Ladd, Rob Ida, Gary Howard, etc. A stepping stone of sorts.
I dont watch his show nor know a hell of a lot about him but. He took a lot of parts, basically stuff most of us wouldn't consider using and built himself a hot rod. Yes the roof line is weird and the windshield post look like 2x4s, but how many of us ACTUALLY hit the nail on the head the first go at it? His time his money ( very little maybe) and his life, I give the guy credit for having the balls to build kooky stuff an show to the world on tv.. And I'll leave it at that. Mitch
How many of us have Gene Winfield stopping by our shops to see what we are up to? (Yes I know thee are some here). The guy is in a small town living his dream, weather or not I love his cars I say good for him! Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Like him or not. He talks funny. Makes weird stuff out of old stuff he finds or can afford and puts it all together to create a moving stopping car. How many of us talk funny and do some weird things to keep our vehicles going or make them better? Yes he is taking things and creating them in his head without rendering. There is no drama on his show like Memphis Street Outlaws where they talk for 30 minutes to show one race. I do not care for the style of some of his customs but am not really a custom lover. He does paint them and has no skulls or tacky add ons so they are not rodent poop. His wife is some nice eye candy and he is passing along his vision to his son. Like him or not he is trying to do what he likes and wants to do.
I like it and the show. he's the mentor for all those who have the sign" built with genuine junkyard parts" hanging in the garage. P.S. i have the sign too.
I've watched the program. I'm not sure where all his energy comes from? Wish I had some of it. (Maybe). I do think he should attend a design class. But what do I know.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I have never heard of the guy until now, since them I did a google search and he has build some unusual cars, I wouldn't call them traditional by any stretch of the imagination. Will he finish it or is it finished, some my disagree with me but it appears to be a rodent rod. HRP
I can't handle that show. Time is much better spent in the garage building / working on something of my own.
I think it's done. On to the next one... It cracks me up when he points out the safety star, or the piston on the shifter handle "so you know it's your car" he says. Like you would have any trouble picking that out in a crowd of hot rods, LOL!
Not commenting on Chad's taste or vision...how about looking at it from a more youthful perspective. If his build something from nothing or very little aproach encourages a few youngsters to get into an otherwise cost prohibitive hobby...how can that hurt?
Doesn't look any different than the stuff i see on trog. And that seems to be accepted. He's got a TV show and i don't, so i guess he's smarter than i am. I've watched some of his shows, some are pretty cool, others make me cringe, but i feel the same way about some of the old customs. I mean come on, you really wanna be just like everybody else? Half of the cars i look at here look just alike.
That ship has sailed already. There are plenty of guys on here, Instagram, etc., putting together quality, traditional cars on shoestring budgets. TROG also comes to mind as a source of inspiration, though some of those builds are far from low-buck. I personally see little room for moral victories. If I as a regular guy build a car that isn't on the same level of quality or style as a car that's professionally built, there is no handicap applied like in golf where I get extra points because I put it together by myself in my home shop. Especially since style and proportions are one of the few things in this hobby that actually cost basically nothing.
You just described ed Roth !! Don't ever remember seeing any plans in anything he built or a measuring tape used either. And well I have to admit some of Ed's cars looked like they might be a bear to drive along with barris. Dragula had too be scary to drive along with the, admitted by many, the horrible handling of the batmobile, that's my dream car btw.
