Photos captioned as Luther Johnson during 1934 with one of the rebodied Studebaker Indy cars in Pennsylvania. This must have been some sort of a Studebaker Promo tour judging by the lettering and the Studebaker road car??

Race history of Los Angeles County from 1900 - 1960's will be featured in the documentary film WHERE THEY RACED... here are a few teaser trailers. the first with Harold Osmer who literally wrote the book. And the 2nd with Tom Malloy - his father built the Gardena Bowl later known as Carrell Speedway.
Next week we'll have a new trailer up featuring Richard parks (Wally's son) and Chuck Griffiths who ran the Pomona drag for 19 years.

The blog with both trailers & more info is here:

Don Harkness was approached by racing driver Norman Leslie 'Wizard' Smith (1890-1958) and former Lord Mayor of Sydney Jack Mostyn to build a car for Smith's attempts to break the Australasian one mile and the world ten mile records. The result was the "Anzac" with a Rolls Royce aero engine and a Cadillac chassis. Following the creation of an Australian record of 128.571 miles (206.909 kilometres) per hour at Gerringong, the team took the "Anzac" to Ninety Mile (Kaitaia) Beach, New Zealand, where it achieved an unofficial record 148 miles (238 kilometres) per hour.

The first photo is captioned Don Harkness in an Overland Special which maybe an earlier version of Whitey??

The second photo the driver is unidentified.

  22. model A kieth and T-Head,
Thanks for posting the great pictures, especialy the early LSR cars.

I am always trying to learn more about these vehicles and love to collect the pictures for my personal files. It would be a great help if you could identify the cars in the pictures as to name, year, and whatever info might be relavant to them. I really don't want to file them under "Unknown Early LSR Car".

This is an INCREDIBLE thread! Thanks to all who contribute!

    Thanks again.

"a 1914 model, fondly known in Australia as Fifty Bob, chasis number A210. The top picture shows Boyd Edkins at the wheel. This was the form the car took, when driven in the 1916-1919 period, stripped of all unnecessary equipment."
