When using a replacement wheel stud (1940 style...) from any of the major suppliers, are the wheel studs that are currently available either grade 5 or grade 8 ?
Using a small file on one of the original damaged 1940 wheel studs, I find that they are quite soft when compared to a replacement stud for a later model Chevy, something along the lines of a 1970 Chevelle... Does anyone have any information on this stud and grading system? Thanks

Back to the start, I'll ask it again.

I would think that would be a question for the supplier.
That said, automotive standards have changed over the years. In the 1940's the wheel studs may not have adhered to any standard other than the one that the Manufacturer/installer thought appropriate for the application. It probably held the wheels on fine for all this time...and people weren't pushing you to do 80 mph.
The originals may indeed be something 'softer'

  4. Your parts house should have a DORMAN catalogue, and it might show it.
