1957 ford 3 speed http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/...Flathead_Trans_1957-59_FordSix-V8-272-292.jpg
Its a long tail ford, mercury, edsel non syncro three speed. notice the coarse spline impuit shaft/ that usually makes it a 57 or older. I think Squirrel used one like the one pictured in his Edsel?
Pretty much correct except the synchro terminology......it's synchronized into second and high gears but not synchronized for first or reverse.
I don't know the reason for that extra long tailhousing. We owned on of those and used the case and gears to fix a shorter trans. The coarse splines don't necessarly denote the year. Ive got a 64 trans with coarse splines. I think the fine splines where 6cyl and the coarse splines used in V8's?. I once owned a 59 ranchero. 6cyl 223 engine. It had the fine splined inpuit shaft. The clutch was slipping. wouldn't pull in high gear. So after work I took it apart. It was a little small diameter pressure plate and clutch disk. I didn't have one. So we pulled a trans flywheel and clutch from a 57 that had a Y block and installed it in that Ranchero. I got a much larger clutch disk doing the swap. And yes a Y block flywheel will fit on a 223 six. And it was a coarse spline trans with a higher low gear ratio. About midnite my son's and I got it back together so I could drive it to work the next day. Ive got a overdrive trans from a 59 ford 6 cyl wagon and its has the fine splines on the inpuit.
I believe this statement is partially in error. The T-85 is not synchronized on all the three forward gears, on only 2nd and 3rd. It was, however, the base transmissionfrom which the T-10 was derived. The curved bottom of the side cover is the most distinguishing feature by which to identify either version. Ray
