I came to H.A.M.B. When i ran across this black and white picture. Thanks LB… In the early 80’s and I bought a 1958 Chevy 2 door wagon while living in the Salt Lake area. I knew it was a rare and definitely cool car way back in 80. I see that you have a lot of good info and history here. Has anyone ever seen any of these around? I know and have read there were more out there. I’m interested in finding what job mine had as it was an old U. S. government car and was issued to a motor pool possibly in salt lake. (I can make out some lettering bubbling from under the paint. It is a 1958 Delray sedan delivery with windows according to the cowl tag and vin. The govt. ordered around 600 of them in 58 so I’ve read. These white colored ones (under the blue) seemed to be leading me towards the A.E.C. I know there are and were all kinds of operations going on in the Salt Lake area in the 50’s and 60’s. Anything or any one you can lead me to would be greatly appreciated and look I forward to meeting more of you. Thanks, my name is Rock for future reference not really Jack This pic is from the SL-1 incident in Idaho…
Welcome to the HAMB from Illinois. I saw a 57 sedan delivery with windows recently. Very different. While it looks a lot like a wagon, the tail gate was one piece that was hinged at the top.
Yeah, I haven’t researched the earlier models much. Mine has the 1 pc lift gate too and came with only a front seat. It has quite a story and we have a long way to go but those are the fun parts of owning an old car…
Hey Rock @Jack Wagon , the more I look at the 2 door wagons, the more differences I notice. The 2 door wagon/sedan deliv. use the longer 2dr sedan doors, while the 4dr wagon uses short 4dr sedan doors...BUT the 2dr wagon has the same rear door window opening as the 4dr wagon. It appears they moved the C pillar back to above the center of the wheel opening (4dr wagon C pillar ends above the front of the wheel opening) and put in a much shorter rear quarter window.
Yes, 58 was a one year body and had many configurations of parts and pieces in the wagons especially. I’ve seen deliveries with the recessment for the windows but with metal instead of glass. Ford had won the govt contract that year by their sliding quarter glass being cheaper than chevys crank style quarter glass so I’ve read…
It was “Radio Delete” hahaha thats a good one if I do say so myself! I’ve had the car for about 35 years so I’m probably contaminated already. I had always known it was some kind of govt car but still don’t know exactly how it was used. I know the door said: U S Government For official use only Then it says motor pool. And maybe Salt Lake City. . I look at it in different light sources and see a little more all the time. I’ve also started looking at the national parks and BLM threads and pictures as well. There was a lot of govt activity out in that desert in the 60’s
Hi. That is going t make a nice ride when done. Don't know if you are chasing parts or not but look at www.chevsofthe40s.com . Don't let the name fool you as the have any parts thru 62. They have several different age catalogues. Good luck, Jimmie
Thanks. I haven’t tried them but use Southwest, Ecklers and several others. 58 is a one year body style and uses previous years parts, 59- thru mid 60’s and a whole bunch of 58 only parts. Right now it’s engine/clutch and trans are rebuilt. Brakes are all done, exhaust and tires. The body is very rough but panels are available. I’ve had it 30+ years sitting in a garage waiting for life to slow down now it all depends on extra $$$.
