I did the search thing and found that my motor came with 4bbl, w/ power pack heads, with 3spd od. I know the motor came out of a Nomad. My question is- What color would the motor have been painted? This motor is grey, I know truck motors were painted grey. But this did come out of a Nomad. Stamp # on block is OI2055IF56GN Thanks for any help.

In 1956, Chevrolet passenger car engines were painted RED rather than orange. http://vcca.org/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/250018/Color_for_56_Chevrolet_265_eng Bill Hirsch has the one-year-only '56 Chevy red in stock http://www.hirschauto.com/prodinfo.asp?number=EE-QUART&variation=CHV RED
let me guess some here no 55/56 265's had lower oil canister provisions, and some 283's then 283's changed and do have canisters. Chevy got rid of some 265's in some 57's. the link tells color but back then dealers could change things in 68 ( i was there to see it ) a truck load of 1969 Z-28's were being unloaded, and there engines were blowing up, they changed em out? i sat in and almost took home the 1969 Z-L1
So far what Ive come up with, decoding the stamped no. on the block is that it is a 56 265 ci with power pack heads and three speed od w/ac. This motor did come out of a 56 Nomad. I also knew that 56 motors were not orange. Altho I was surprised to find out they were red. The motor I have is grey, which colorwise is a truck motor. I have talked to the guy that owns the Nomad this motor came out of, he's quite sure it is the original motor for the car. This grey motor just got me curious! Thanks to all that have responded.
I'm pretty sure TRUCK 265's were YELLOW. Someone, along the way, has painted it grey; passenger car 265's were red, the ONLY year for red. And, it was ONLY the 55 265 without a block mounted oil filter; the remote oil filter was an option. In 56 the 265 block came with a cast-in-the-block oil filter boss, and the cannister. The 265 was still the BASE V-8 engine with STANDARD shift and 2 BARREL CARB in 57. All automatic 57's got the 283, all 4 barrel and FI engines were 283's. Keep that 265, or send it to me; I have a just completed set of 5306 heads, and the early dual 4 barrel setup (in fact, two of those early intakes). Then, in mid year, they changed the dual 4 barrel heads to having larger ports, larger and a different dual four intake. Do a search for "265", there are a couple of good threads on them, and some misinformation. Butch/56sedandelivery.
I thought all '56 Chevy engines were Red (not sure about trucks) and in 1957 when they moved up to 283 but used the remaining 265 blocks and bored them (.125") they were painted yellow before moving on to actual 57 blocks which then began the orange phase.
Correct, 55' dated block's had upper mounted filter like that of a Stove Bolt 6. 265's also made there way into 57' 150 series Cars and into 57' Trucks as well.
