    Hello,

Our favorite resort hotel in the Santa Barbara area is located in Goleta. Back in our 20 something days, we had to stop in Goleta due to the massive weather front that was hitting the coastal drive. Despite the wiper blades going 100 mph back and forth, it was becoming a danger to be on the road. We were coming back from a trip down Highway 1 from Big Sur and San Luis Obispo, CA. Luckily, we pulled off of a freeway exit and found this resort hotel on the side street. It was the Holiday Inn in Goleta, CA.

With a few modern touches, the pool area still looks the same as the first time we stopped as 20 somethings. The Holiday Inn Motels were for everyone back in the early days of long road trips everywhere. It was always a nice place to stay regardless of the town or trip.

In our latest visit to the same resort hotel, it has been changed to the Kimpton Goodland Resort Hotel. The motif is pure So Cal surf theme from the early 1960’s era. When arriving at the resort, the first thing anyone sees is the cool 1950 Ford Woody Wagon. Instantly, thoughts went to the station wagon and the surf theme as we walked into the lobby. We asked for an upstairs room and shivers came when we walked up steps and went into the spacious room.

We both looked at the room and instantly said it was the same room as back in the day we discovered the Holiday Inn when we were 20’s. How cool is that? Of course, the room was definitely upgraded to the 60s surf theme, with wood walls and accessories to make the vibe a little different from other hotels in the area.

In closer inspection of the 50 Ford Woody Station Wagon, thoughts went back to 1950-51 near the Terminal Island section of Long Beach. The old Ford Motor Company had a West Coast car/wagon building factory right on the waterfront, below the huge lifting bridge. Our 3rd grade class went on a field trip to see the assembly line and the rest of the factory.

It was an eye opener. During the assembly line of the station wagons, was a long line of woody wagons. One of the workers saw me touching the wood siding and said he had a surprise for me. A piece of “wood” from the siding. It was a flexible sheet of wood-looking sticker sheet. What a surprise!

Despite the fact that those style of woody wagons had an alternate type of wood, it still impressed us as 3rd graders and now as many times over/older hot rod folks.

This woody in the driveway of the Kimpton Goodland Resort Hotel had plenty of cool things about it.
