The carb backfired and did this to the old foam air cleaner. Would like to replace with the one in back with a newer, better filter material inside. Still want the look without the worthless foam. Working on fixing the cause. Any suggestions?

dual quads? I put a pair of Moroso 8" air cleaners on my blower motor...see my avatar...

    Those foam things are worthless.

About 35 years ago I worked for Lynx Engineering in Sydney, Australia who invented this style of air filter. At that time these "Ram-flo" filters were huge sellers with applications for nearly any car made as well as aftermarket and were exported around the world.
The original foam was definitely flame resistant. It couldn't be lit by a blow torch but if you held the torch on it for long enough it would char and crumble. I have had a number of backfires and no fire.
Obviously whoever makes them now doesn't care enough to use the right foam. Maybe they come from China?
I still don't believe they filtered as well as a good quality paper element but certainly gave excellent air flow. The unit pictured was rated at 1000 cfm.
Today I try to use K&N filters or similar.

WOW! Vendors still sell that shit? Those are so 1980's and the 80's sucked. Get a REAL air filter, man.

-Not dual quad - just 2 air cleaners to show before/after
-Had a large Moroso on there before but wanted to see the Holley and the rest of the engine.
-Thought these went back to before the '80s
-Looking for a fly-eye (60s?) but would have the same foam issue
-Agree the foam is junk so want to find a more flame resistant material before the second one goes up in flames (with much clapping in the background).

they make great frisbees for the trash can , I would get a small but tall 6" aircleaner if you have the room should flow better than one of them .

  13. get rid of them, they don't filter and love to burn. I just gave two away over the week end at my local swap meet.

Can you fit a smaller round filter and cap under the mesh and paint it black so to preserve the look you want to keep .
