Hey Ryan do you have any more info on that powergen mount? The one that Walden sold a few years back that places the powergen almost in that same exact spot isn't in production anymore. Not sure if the guys who built this motor built that mount for this motor only.
I bought it from So-Cal... Keith is in the middle of making it work on the powergen. I'll bring details when ready.
I think the sbc hating thing comes from the use of a 76 c20 pickup 350 engine in a "rat rod" or other builds with less concern to being historically accurate. A 350 with a quadrapuke, hei, and a alternator is a far less attractive looking motor than what you guys built. Still I think even that makes you point. That thing is versatile. And don't get me wrong. I love the sbc and bbc for that matter. I know those engines better than any other. I just think that's one of the reasons why. Ps. That thing looks tits. If ignoance is bliss SBC bashers are some happy muthas. Just sayin... Thank you for the color picture, but I want a full color shot when she's done too. This has to be the best therapy one could ask for, no?
I bought the engine. It's supposed to be a genuine early '60's 327. I'll post the numbers sometime. If it's not, I'll raise Hell.
Jim "Jake"Jacobs was making some neat generator mounts and alt mounts too. I kept spying them on the Walden's website and when I was ready to buy they were gone. So I bought from SoCal as well. I think the the SoCal ones are copies of Jake's.
Yeah they stopped making them a while ago. This socal bracket still needs some work to be compatible with a powergen unlike the Jitney bracket. Nothing anyone can't handle though i don't think.
I know this was a joke, and it is funny considering the debate near the beginning of this thread.... But can someone tell me why this would actually be bad? I mean a SBC short block looks the same no matter what year. And it's not like guys walk around checking casting numbers. Lol Isn't this similar to using a deuce Brookville body? Or any Brookville body? Not trying to start an argument...just curious.
I'll bite. For me the heads, intake, valve covers and distributor are the biggest difference. I would actually love to see a 350 or dare I say a 383 dressed up to play the part of a 283. I think honestly we're all just bench racing and splitting hairs. I wouldn't turn down this coupe that they are building if it had a built 70's 350 or a 2 barrel 283. That car is gonna be badass. Period. Besides Chevy motors are easy to change! Sent from my SM-G900T using H.A.M.B. mobile app
I know of a 383 c.i. which looks like an early engine. Maybe the only 283 block with 50mm cam bearings. And I also know that Dynoroom here on the HAMB has built at least one engine with aluminum heads that have double humps carefully crafted and are needle-scaled to look cast. vic
It's one of those bench racing topics that has no actual answer. I chose to spring extra cash for fewer cubes. I'd call it a bit of a street-cred issue. I want a mid-sixties period car (more or less). This is just one more thing to back that up. It has a Comp 268H cam. Would it have more zoot with an extra 20 or so inches? Maybe so. Could I use it in such a light car? I could find a way. This one is supposed to crank out about 330 HP. Years ago, I got to drive a '65 Vette with a similar engine/manual transmission. Just the thought of that brings a smile to my face. The coupe will be lighter. I can't wait!
This has been so enjoyable to watch, I'd like to know what's next, haha. From the matching of the old paint, to the engine debate, and then the great beer debate, I'm signing up for the next build, before it's even thought of.
I just reminded myself that the girl riding with me in that Vette looked like a young Ann-Margret. Memories. . . Ready to make new ones. Oh, and I'm a Miller Lite man. It came out about the time I started drinking. A Lite or two brings back a good memory or two also.
I plugged everything into my formula deal and the numbers it spit out was 350hp at 5000 rpm and 400 lbs of torque at 4000 rpm... Prolly need to subtract a little from that for the three deuce setup and I'd bet 330 is pretty damned close....
Very nice motor photos Ryan, I like them in black and white. Your view for the details is really awesome. That separates the (semi) professional photographer from the "phone shooter"
ultimately its about having fun debating with a bunch of guys on the internet you don't know and to see a badass hot rod being built that is fun, safe, and reliable. I've enjoyed following along and look forward to the next build. Rand Man your my new hero.
Here is a similar Alt. Bracket Speedway sells. Used one on a SB several years ago, had to do some shimming to get the belts to line up but it worked good. Not sure how to post a link, so here is a pic of the bracket. Comes plain steel for $50.00.
OK, details on the gen/alt mount... First, buy this thing: http://www.est1946.com/so-calalternatorbracket.aspx Then, Keith bent and lengthened the top mount: Then, he adjusted the tab on the bottom mount so that it once again lined up with the passenger side front intake bolt: Then, he added spacers between all these tabs: Final look: Keith also mentioned that if you are gonna use a real generator, you are gonna need to figure out support for the extra weight.
Elegantly understated - very nice. At the risk of a stoning and being thrown to the lions on here I have to admit a soft spot of SBCs
