Hey guys. I have a 62 bel air with a 350, muncie 4 speed and a ford 9 in. with 3.70 gears and a limited slip. Anyway, when i do a burn out, i wheel hops BAD! I have boxed the control arms and added polyurethane bushings. Added the "second" upper control arm. The rear springs are front springs out of a V 8 car with air bags inside. The shocks are just stock replacement car quest brand. Has anyone ran into this before and fixed it? If so, whar did you end up doing? Any help would be great. Its getting nice out and i need to do some burnouts!!! Ha!
Check out posts by member BSL409. He has the nicest leaving 61 and 62 Chevy's I've ever seen. He has a thread titled 61 Biscayne 409 Super Stock Build (or something like that) that has some great pics of his suspension mods.
Back in the 60s cars were raised up better weight transfer the X frame Chevys cars usually did not wheel hop stock heights but when you raised them up they did.
I'm going to Go along with Sunbeam in that your jacked up in the ass like a stink bug look is probably 80% of the cause of the wheel hop.
so, why are you running the rear spring set up? without pics it is very hard to know how your ride & suspension looks - the rear should be low enough to keep the control arms parallel to the ground - what tires are you running - stock shocks likely not correct for hard launches - polyurethane bushings help but, not the final solution
Lower the front mounting point for the lower trailing arms, if you still have problems move the rear mounting point up on the rear of the upper arms.
The rear tires are 295/50 15s. I run the rear springs and bags for the ride height or stance. I thought the bags would also help with the wheel hop
Not any help for your problem; but I used to pull the back seat, cut out the sheet metal, weld up, and plate the broken out upper mounts for all the neighborhood kids back in olden times. Weak area, most of these were just old stock 283's.
What's your pinion angle ? Can you video the yoke area while you preload the axle to see how much movement it has ?
3 degrees down. I never thought about video taping it. I like those support bars. I might try to build me a set. Thank you guys
Gus, I was around 50 yrs ago with these cars. i raced a 63 SS in stock, 7 inch slicks. stiff station wagon springs, air shocks, no wheel hop. ran mid 14s . my friend had a 409/425 the, high 12s on 7 inch slicks. no hop.. The first thing i would try is another set of tires. any matched set . Pete.
