I've read the entire thread on '55-'56 Plymouths and Dodges hoping the answer would show but if it did, I never saw it: Can anyone tell me what late(r) Mopar automatic will fit up to the '56 Plymouth 277 Poly head engine? The 3 speed stick is trashed. We can adapt an available 4 speed but thought an auto would be nicer.

Dale I put a '76 727 3 speed auto to a '66 318 ploy. Bolted right up, no mods. I hope this bump helps you get what your looking for.
    Merry Christmas!

I always thought the poly bellhousing bolt pattern was the same as the A/LA/Early Hemi bellhousings. So any small block 904, 727, A500, or A518 should bolt up. Maybe even a 5 speed auto from a 5.7 hemi if you want to do all the computer work.

Pre 63 A engine Poly, EarlyHemi, and Hemi based Poly all share the same bellhousing bolt pattern as well as the 8-bolt crank so the 277 has two options for the auto trans:
TF up to and including 1962, straight bolt up, no adapters.
727 TF 63 and newer require an adapter.
The 904 requires a special adapter, not commonly available.

63 and later 4-speed package will also require an adapter.

For a modern 727, use the adaptor for the 392 Hemi.
