Bought a 64 Falcon 289/3 spd on the floor.. Was at a swap meet last year and tripped over something and almost fell on my ass.. It was a 4spd top loader.. Guy said it was rebuilt, so I bought it for a very very low price.. Anyway, I just installed it in my little Falcon.. It was a long tail shaft out of a full size Ford.. Had to fab a shifter mounting plate to move the shifter forward of the bench seat.. I always liked the look of the Ford shifter handle with the reverse lockout but the shifters themselves were usually junk.. So I used an old Hurst shifter, cut the handle off and welded a plate on top of the shifter to mount the Ford handle.. Also had to fab a floor shift cover(still needs painted) for the boot to screw to.. Here are some pics of how I did it.. I'm a sloppy fabricator but it does work nicely and I like having a 4 spd...**clic pic for larger image**
I know the case says ORION but it is a true wide ratio 4 speed.. Probably a service trans made when they switched operations to Mexico...
I love that era of Falcon, this is my 65 that I have owned for 45 years ! It's mostly original, including the T-10 trans and shifter. If I ever break the gearbox, I have a toploader with extension housing that has the bosses for the forward mounted shifter. Great car you have there !!!
Man I ant one of those falcons lol they are cool Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app HotRod Harry
After driving the Falcon a short distance, it developed a heck of a vibration.. It vibrated while driving but was just as bad sitting still with clutch pedal in or out, no difference.. Only thing I did was take the 3 spd out and put the 4 spd in it's place, also shortening the drive shaft.. It had a new trans mount so I replaced the engine mounts to no avail.. Still vibrated badly.. I jacked it up and thought maybe the dampener was bad.. I looked over the trans again and noticed the top bolt on the shifter bracket was touching the cross member.. After beating the cross member with my air chisel, There was enough room to stop the vibration( the top bolt head in the pic).. Never dreamed that bolt touching the cross member could cause that much vibration.. Back on the street now...**clic pic for larger image**
Crazy, isn't it? Now you know just exactly what the engine and transmission mounts are doing for you.
