JMHO but I think they look a little bit cliche. I dont really recall a lot of the nicer Kustoms using that bumper. They were all smooth not rippled. The earlier kustom (early to late 40s) used them but they used the late 30s ( i think) desoto bumpers.

Are the 49 plymouth bumpers the ones with the three ribs and are semi square in shape? Does anyone have pics of them on a custom or stock appl.

The front bumper, you`ll have to widden. the rear bumper you will have to shorten. they look much better than stock. Don`t buy Bumpers By Briz, they look cheap on old style kustoms. They gotta be cool or people wouldn`t bring them to swap meets to sell. And sell they do. Look on the 49 to 51 shoebox thread..

I just gave mine away. They do not look good on '49-'51 Fords. They look too heavy.
I went with '49-'50 Ford bumpers.
    Smooth, clean and neat.

Rik thank you....your opinion would be greatly apreciated on the bumpers. What would you run if you were building a chopped 51 Ford. Thanks Skip.

    Smoothed 51 Ford bumpers!
The 51 Ford bumpers are a lot more attractive than the 49-50 plain versions.
The 1949 Plymouth bumpers can look nice though. But I just love the look of smoothed (welded bolds) 51 Ford units.

Dont recall the details, but I do recall being very dissapointed after buying a set for my 51 and realizing I was going to need to cut, reweld and rechrome my newly purchased bumpers.

Here is a pic of my old '50 with Plymouth bumpers.

Funny story, when I took it to Paso in '03 I came back from walking around to find Pat Ganahl standing in front of it talking to some guy. I stayed backed and hear him said he never liked Plymouth bumpers on Fords. I knew then it would never be in Rod & Custom or Rodder's Journal :D

I think they work on some Fords and look tacky on others. I got mine with those bumpers so I never changed them, but probably would have kept Ford bumpers if I had a choice.

  18. the trick is to use two rear bumpers and not the front. the front is wider then the rear. I used two back on the plymouth and it took that wide look away.

my buddy just got a set off his brother for his '50 but i haven't seen them on the car yet. i agree with rik that the smooth bumpers usually look better but there are exceptions. if you look at the red and white car in riks first post, the ribs in the bumper match the shape of the '47 olds grill like a perfectly matched pair. then when you look at the silver car, the smooth bumper and smooth simple grill work perfectly together. so i think you need to take the overall build into consideration. what works on one maynot work on another. good luck.

I've got desoto bumpers and a desoto grill in my 51 convertible. I'll see if I can get you a picture of it later today. Looks pretty much like what you see above though.
