I seem to remember from my stacks of old Hot Rod magazines from the late '50s and early '60s, that some guys used '49 Merc hubcaps on some sort of reverse rim. Am I remembering that correctly? The mags are locked in a trunk for which there is no key. Any info and pics would be cool. Thanks, BDL
For a rod, wheels would likely have been '49 type Merc, maybe Lincoln, or Ford pickup newr than about 1956. These had early Ford pattern but with external nubbins for the Merc caps. Centers of course remained in normal direction when rims were reversed.
The caps were the smooth '50 Mercs, preferred over the '49 lettered version. The wheels would have been reversed '49-'51 stock Merc, or Merc centers with Buick or Chrysler outers welded on for the rears. Best looking painted black with whitewalls, or chromed with black tires
Information flash here! The Merc caps will fit Merc wheels only. ('49-'51, with external nubs: 11" diameter cap circle) They have 3 nubs. DO measure the circle, or try a hub cap before buying: Lincoln wheels the same year look identical, but have the nubs farther apart; Lincoln diameter is 11-1/4", and the cap will NOT FIT! If you have a later passenger car rear (and front rotors that are 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern) Pete the Wheel has Merc caps that are aftermarket, and fit the later wheels with a hub cap circle of 10". Newer Ford pickup wheels ('57 on, with external nubs) have 4 nubs per wheel. (measure straight across North to South for cap diameter) and so do Ford and Chevrolet passenger car: they are an 'Industry Standard', that let us run lookalike Merc caps on anything! Ain't life grand?
