I've got a 41 Buick im trying to get the column wired and can't figure out the factory turn signal wiring. It has six wires coming out of the column. Two wires go to the flasher. I can hook power to the flasher and get current to two of the wires when I move the switch....but I can't get them to blink....plus what are the other wires for. The brakes lights are separate from the signals
    Thanks Clark

Pictures would be nice, along with some wire colors. You might find a wiring diagram online too.

No colors on the wires...it's the original cloth.

Here you can see the two groups of wires....the two wires not seen are hooked to the flasher

Couldn't find a diagram online...other than buying one. Trying to get it done today

Normally, this is what the six wires do:

    1) Flasher output (input to turn signal switch) (the other terminal of the flasher is wired to the ignition terminal on ignition switch.
    2) Brake switch input (output from brake switch)
    3) left front turn signal bulb output
    4) right front turn signal bulb output
    5) left rear brake/turn signal bulb output
    6) right rear brake/turn signal bulb output

Label the wires with #s 1,2,3,4,5,6

    test 1
With the turn signal switch in the center position do the following: Take a jumper wire and hook from battery connection nearby to #1 wire. Next take a test lamp and go down the other five wires till you find two wires that light. The other three should not light. If no light, move the battery connection to the next wire #2 and repeat test with wires 3 thru 6. Keep doing this till you get two wires that light. Note what # wires they are.

This will now tell you the two rear lamp outputs, along with the brake switch input wire.

    test 2

Next, with the two wires identified, move the turn signal to the left position and check the two wires you found in the first test. One should be off, the other on. Note the one that is off, that is the left rear light wire.

    test 3
Switch to right turn position. Check the two wires again, they should be opposite to the second test. If not, then take the wire (that made the lamp light) in second test and reverse the battery wire and this wire. Perform 2nd test again, should be same as before, then try 3rd test. It should be opposite 2nd test. This wire is now the right rear lamp wire.

After you have these wires identified, write them down.

    Now for the flasher.

As was pointed out, the flasher has one connection to the ignition terminal of ignition switch, or a feed from the fuse panel.

The other flasher terminal will now go to one of the 3 remaining wires.

    test 4
Hook up to one of the three wires to the flasher and note the #

Turn on the ignition and put the turn signal in left position. Check the two remaining wires for the lamp to flash. This wire will be left front turn signal wire.

    test 5
Now put turn signal in right turn position and check the remaining wire. It should be lit and flashing. If no flashing, then go back to test 4 and reverse the wires. Now try test 5 again and hopefully that will flash. This wire is your right front turn signal wire.

One last thing, the test lamp may or may not flash in tests 4 and 5, due to low current of test bulb.

    good luck

I got them to work without the two extra wires....I tested every which way possible and those two wires did nothing.

This system wasn't set up to run the brake lights through the column...brake lights and running lights are one socket and turn in another
    Thanks Clark

Good deal. You say that 2 wires do nothing. Hmmm, that leaves 4 wires, but if you have a separate turn signal system, that would only require 3 wires, that is unless the 4th wire is for powering the flasher. The two extra wires were probably for common turn/brake signals or something else.

Are you getting power to the 2 wires ? If so put a lamp load on each wire and see if it then flashes. Many flashers are made to only work with a specific load ie 2 bulbs if you do not have enough load no flashie !! That would let you know you had a bulb out. If you show power on the wire load it with 2 bulbs and see what happens.
