Hey guys! Starting to work on my 409 build into my 62 Bel air. The car is not an original 409 car and I'm not trying to make a clone. What I AM after is the look as if someone swapped a 409 into this car in the 60s to be the fastest car in town. I am loosing sleep over little things like hose clamps, spark plugs wires and air cleaner. By the way I DONT want the typical 14 inch chrome air cleaner, but I don't want a factory 409 air cleaner. Any body got any good ideas? Or some good old pics? Thanks guys!!

I am resurrecting a 409 after a 27 year sleep for a customer/ friend in my spare time. Removed the GM tower clamps today by cutting them off, lousy onetime use only clamp made for restorers, I'm replacing them with good old s/s wormgear clamps. Got plug wires from Rock Auto, a apsolute duplicate for the originals at a fraction of the cost at the chevy resto parts houses. They had the slight cock rather than the straight on insulator. Can't offer anything on the aircleaner, that's a matter of taste. (your's) Ralphie
Probably gonna run single 4 barrel. I have the carb, haven't pulled the trigger on an intake yet. BUT a 2x4 intake isn't that much more money, but then I would need 2 matching carbs.
The dual snorkel looks good. Though you may find them a little pricey if you can find one. I had one of the later ones, chrome with 180 degree snorkels (L79). Got stupid money before they were being repro'd. Incidentally, I ran it on a '62 Impala w/vette valve covers for a while before I sold it. I've been saving a chrome, louvered, vette pie-pan for a similar project to yours in the future.
I have a like new single snorkel air cleaner from back in my 348/409 days setting on the shelf. looks just like the one shown above but with a single snorkel fwiw. If interested just pm me.
Have seen dual snorkel air cleaners made from 2 single cleaners, much cheaper picked up at swap meet. ( that's me). Run a single snorkel on a 64 Chevelle, that came with a 2 barrel base bought cheaper yet for $25.00. Then made my own aluminum 4 barrel base sized to the outer 11.560" diameter of the o.e.m. size K&N replacement filter. The set-up looks stock from above but is open 360 degrees at the bottom and you don't need dual snorkels. Dual snorkels look cool though.
Times two on the make your own dual snorkel. For not much cash you can experiment a few times until you get the right look
The 409 is not going to fit without a lot of hard work, I have a baby Hemi that's a shoe in I would trade or the 409!
Yep Craaazy money, I bought an original Nova L79 dual snorkel top many years ago for $200. Thought I had lost my mind, looked for years for the correct base, never did find one, friend of mine found an NOS one and I offered him $500, he turned it down so I sold it for twice what I paid. BTW the chrome 65 Malibu L79 version is the same top as the 409 version.
