Does anyone know if a 4 speed munice will mount up to a 1962 Chevy 235? The rear end is a stock 1958 Delray.

    thanks

  2. The Muncie should be a direct bolt-up for the original 3-speed box. The length is the same too.

Actually, if it's still in the '62 Chevy, the Muncie is going to be longer than the stock three speed, and will require driveshaft modification. The yoke will also need to be replaced with a later '64 and newer style with more splines.

also if it's a heavy duty or newer muncie with the 26 spline input shaft, you'll have to replace the clutch disc.

But yeah, chevy tried to make it easy on us in some ways.

Hmmm, how long is a Muncie? that would be 21 inches.Every "short" car 3 speed I've seen is 21 inches long.Rear spline is different, yes.

I guess we've seen different transmissions? Every car Muncie 4 speed I've seen is the same length as the long early 3 speed. The short early 3 speed is shorter.

I just measured a Muncie 4 speed laying on my bench,it's actually 21-1/2 inches. The Saginaw 4 speed laying on the floor is the same.I've swapped Saginaw 4 speeds in place of car 4 bolt side cover 3spds( the ones with a tranny mount) with only a yoke change necessary in some situations.I've seen car 3 speeds with no rear mount that were the same length.But....you might be right about one type being longer,I just never seen one.

    '55-'57 3 speed=same length as Muncie
    '58-'64 car 3 speed=shorter than Muncie
'65 car 3 speed=same length as Muncie, and has rear mount

The "X" chasssis Chevrolets, 58-64, that had 3-speeds (Muncie 3-speeds with a 4 bolt side cover), were the "short" 3 speeds. IF they had a BW T-10 ,they were of the "longer" style, and the drive lines were shorter. These cars also took the "shorter", or 25" long Powerglides, as opposed to the 28" long Powerglides used in Chevy II/Nova cars, and P.U. Trucks. The aluminum Powerglides came out in 62 behind 327/409 cars; the 283 62's still used the cast iron Powerglide. Butch/56sedandelivery.

How long is the shorter X frame 3 speed? 58 to 64 3 speeds have a mount pad on the tailhousing, that would be the only type of 4 bolt side cover tranny with a mount? The ones I've had measured 21-1/2 inches.

  11. If it's a 3 speed with the OD, which some X-frame cars had, it's the same length as the 4-speed. Same driveshaft for both.
