    I heard that you could put a 904/A500 to the 392 using the late model small starter and grinding on the block. Anyone ever do this?

    The 904 mounts the starter about ½" higher than a 727 and thus the mounting problem. If you really think that an o/d is needed then you could redrill the selected adapter (or have the manufacturer do it...maybe) and rotate the trans mounting holes/dowels to effectively lower the starter. The trans will not know the difference.
    No, this modification is not a diy project unless you have a machine shop in your garage.
