i switched over a 1937 dodge to 12 volt but want to try and use original fuel gauge can this be done and how
Use a Runtz voltage reducer, or a center tap on the battery, or a resistor, all will give you 6 volts for your gauge and other 6 volt accessories.
I got a resistor but in the directions it says i need to know the ohms range of my gauge? Depending on the range i may have to use more than one resistor?
Just search for the exact P/N, but there is an integrated circuit voltage regulator that cuts volts form 12 to 6 output. I am going from memory, LM7806 or similar to that. Only a couple dollars, good for 1 amp which is plenty for fuel gage. Put one on my 37 Chevy fuel gage and works just like it should, the car is 12 volt conversion.
What about an instrument cluster voltage reducer that ford ran? Ford used 6 volt gauges from 1957 through the 70s. I'm using one from MACS in my 55 to run my fuel and temp gauges. From what I read, if a runts fails it will send 12 volts to whatever they are supplying. Ford reducer will fail to open and allow 0 volts through. That is what I read, not experienced.
