Technical 2x4 WCFBs: Cadillacs on a Desoto??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by hotrodA, Jun 22, 2020.

  1. After searching everything that comes to mind, I am still looking for an answer.

Can a set of factory 56 Cadillac dual 4 bbl. WCFB's be made to work on a Desoto dual 4 bbl. intake?
Both carbs and intake have the same small "square" bolt pattern.
    365 Caddy vs. 330 Desoto.
    Edumicate me, please.
    Thanks!

They don't know what engine is underneath them. At least with a stick, might be some differences in linkage if A/T.

  3. Thanks. That part I do understand.
Guess what I'm looking for is CFM and jetting as compared to Desoto. Or just bolt on.
Maybe @carbking (Jon) on here will see this.

They can be made to work. How well they will work will depend on:

    (1) The state of tune of the engine
    (2) The skill of the tuner
    (3) The depth of the rear pocket of the owner

Expect to buy at least one (if you are really good) set of custom-made rods for each carb; but probably two different sets. It took me the third set on my 390 Ford before I got them the way I wanted them. But they worked pretty well on the first set. I tend to be more "picky" on tuning than many.

If you do it, build them perfectly stock (for a repeatable baseline) and tune from there.

And replace the chokes with normal chokes.

    Jon.

    I particularly like #3!
#1 Engine is new rebuilt, will get it running on single 4 bbl.
    #2 Not a lot except 3x2-SBC, flathead 94's
I had planned on stock rebuild with your kits.
Have the manifold, got a line on the carbs, but haven't pulled the trigger.

HotrodA, Yes, my 292 Ford Yblock uses 2 1953 Oldsmobile Carter WCFB’s. Almost the same cubes.
If the compression ratio on your engine is the same as the engine they came from no jet changes will be necessary from my experience.
Usually Cads and other match sets are way too expensive.
I started with a 53 Cad and a 53 Olds. Different fuel inlets but very close adaptable linkage. A year later I found another 53 Olds with the same number on the brass tag and replaced the Cad. My 56 Ford and the Olds had pretty close comp ratios and I used some slider linkage parts from a FE 427 Ford dual quads which repo available. Even 7 years ago I ended up over $1000 for 2 carbs and the manifold.

Would I do it again .... in a heart beat. On any carbureted engine nothing look better than dual quads. I even made my own air cleaners which you will find a pain since the tops are smaller.

As a point I purchased a UniSyn from Summit and made an adapter to fit the top and check them once a year and made one change once. I’ve post the photo here before. E13FDB89-E20C-4208-ACE5-56198479C967.jpeg

^^^^ That is one nice looking engine compartment. I smile every time I see it.
I bought some really nice cast aluminum (not plastic) adapters to use the 5 1/8" air filters on the 4 5/16" early 4 bbl from Centerville Auto the Nailhead Buick guys. They are not dirt cheap but then nothing nice ever is. I didn't see them on their website but I'd give them a call. I think I bought mine off of their eBay store.

Also Speedway is selling the V8 air cleaners (from Spotlite I think) they also come in 4 5/16" if you like that style.

  9. Thanks for the feedback, guys.
Jimmy, that linkage tip is one of the things I needed. That's a beautiful setup.
Progressive, I presume, with the slide?

Yes you can see the slider on the front carb. It shows not to completely open the front carb in the photo. Just the way I have it now. The rear carb has the small bracket o made and attached to make the foot feed work and get full throttle. The Oldsmobile’s linkage worked different but easily over come by looking at what you need to do on yours. Good luck.

  11. Thanks!
Hope to use them on a 330 Desoto in my 40 pickup.
