Technical 283 I.D info

  1. I have a 283 I took out of a 61 pick up.I have been trying to decode the #s stamped on the tab on front of the block,but no luck on The internet so i was hoping somebody might have this info. the # is ( FII23WA ) thanks in advance, Pete. the casting # 3849852 shows it is a 283,

    WA was used for the 283 in '65, '66, and '67. Behind, and to the right of the distributor hole on the block is the date code of the engine...usually a letter followed by three numbers. The last number will be the year...example: A236 = January 23rd, 1966.

    Help please on original fitment & equip.

    WA was actually used in:
    65-67 283 175HP manual Trans L32 1x2bbl carb 10, 20, 30 CK truck
    68 307 200HP manual trans L14 1x2bbl carb 10,20 series C truck
    69 350 215HP automatic trans L65 1x2bbl carb series 60 truck

    GF was used on:
    55-56 Bel Air 265 162hp 3sp 1x2bbl ac carb
    57 belair 283 250hp turboglide fuel injection
    65-67 impala 283 195hp powerglide L32 1x2bbl roch carb
    69 impala 327 235hp 350hp 1x2bbl

    True, but both of my replies were to identify their specific block numbers. The other engines you listed were for different block numbers.

    Agreed, the next step is date code and then casting number.
