I had that kind of noise in the 400"SBC I had in my blue truck, for about a year and a half and it ran ok, drove it all over So. Cal. at any speed I felt like. Seems it only did it at a steady speed then went away on acceleration, then after a long while it started becoming a clankataclankata...
So I tore it down and it's got the #3-4 crank journal chewed up to the tune of about of .030" missing from the crank and that's a raggedy measure, not cleaned up.
It's just gonna get a new crank one of these days and go back in the blue truck.
It sounded like a lifter to start with, then pinging, then a rod... :(
If it's just a dime a dozen SBC, just drive it till it really needs fixin' and slug another one in it. That's what I did*.

*(I'm friggin lucky I didn't throw a rod coming back over the Grapevine from the March Meets!)

my friend did say he noticed a little "rod knock" im not sure what it sounds like so i dont know how long that had been going on.... if i could fix the sputtersputtercoughpopfart i would just drive it until it threw a rod or what ever... it a 400m ford aka a boat anchor i could care less if i lost it... but i cant because it keeps craping out

Have you checked for an air leak? What were the plugs like when they came out?

wander up the back streets and when you find a big old 60's 4 door beater car, offer to haul it away and then use the engine and stuff in your truck, you'll never regret it:)

Trade it for a horse, ride the horse till it gets sick, then shoot the horse! In the meen time you saved all this money on gas and you can buy somthing else for $500..... Maybe another horse:D !
