http://www.automotoportal.com/article/1958-plymouth-tornado-to-be-sold-by-red-barons I know I've seen this on here before, but I can't find the post. Looks like the auction company is trying to capitalize on all the recent big-dollar sales of 1950s-era concept cars and making the best effort possible to call this a "concept." At the same time, they're throwing the "custom" term around. So which was it? (and no, there is not a third choice for "abomination.") dan
They can call it anything they like,Dan. The car speaks for itself.UGLY. You can see the Superbird / Daytona influence, though. Nice write up on that RPU you did in Hemmings BTW. Glenn
http://www.desoto58.com/peoplezone/peopletornado58.html unrestored pics. I gotta wonder though, after spending $150K to restore it, why does it have the rear 1/4 chrome spears in the wrong location, and wheels/tires from the wrong era?
thanks, Glenn. Gotta get down to see you guys sometime. email me when your next event's coming up. dan
Wow! They really can be polished! j/k I thought it was an individual who built it? I'm really surprised that a car maker was using parts from other makes to come up with a concept car. The hood looks very clearly from a 47 - 50ish Ford truck. I bet you could fit an aircraft engine under the fin. I think its the nose that I just can't seem to get around. Sorta like Barbara Striesand when she was young. A great deal of work went into the body and I can appreciate the work if not the look more now than when I first saw it.
Concept car and custom car are now interchangeable? If they built this car in '58 and were planning on going into production, who was going repop 10 year old Ford truck hoods? Moses Lunden? 20 books? This is starting to reek.
