So I have my engine and trans out of the Edsel to put a new oil pump, seals, freeze plugs, water pump and transmission seals.

My question is regarding a rear main seal. I have never replaced a rear main and I was wondering if there were any tricks to putting in a new seal.

Any hep would be greatly appreciated.

    Mine was a 59 361.

Clean everything really well with solvent.

I put some" right stuff" sealent in the seal groove before installing seals. I raised the crank to do this..
offset the seal ends about 3/8- 1/2 inch with the cap base.

Use the rubber side seals with the nails.
I put a small amount of ' right stuff' in the outside corners before installing the cap.
I also put some sealent in the side seal groove,on the cap, on the nail side.
I believe a i also put a skim on the block where the side seals will seat.
I also sanded a small amount of the side seals, so I wouldnt distort them while driving them in.
Then drive the nails in. I might have put a skim of oil on the nails before driving them in.

    Hope this helps.
