Projects 1955 Cadiallac Convertible Conversion

    I next cut out the cross member and shock mount to make room for the c-notch. I then clamped the outer pieces to either side of the frame tapped into place. I lined up the top piece and marked for cutting. I tacked pieces together and removed and welded inside and out. Just as I began to weld the final assembled piece to the frame my welder ran low on gas. Here is where I was forced to stop.

    Well with plenty of day light left and no argon, I pulled out the plasma and began to cut away the rear for a license plate french bucket.

    I placed an order when I got home at rollpans.com for (2) 480 compressors, a 5 gallon tank, 1/2" lines and valves, bags and brackets. Hopefully all this arrives in time to begin work next weekend when I finish the c-notch's... BTW, those guys are giving 20% of to first time customers. Luckily I fell into this category. I was already planning on using them since they seemed like the most competitive on there prices and Ben and Steve are both very knowledgeable and cool guys. I can't wait for this thing to be on the ground!!!

    Hey, I like this project. Not too many Caddys out there, but what is really cool is making it a convertible. Usually people cut off tops for roadsters, but in this case, it's gonna be like it was made that way. I love it!

    Got back to work this weekend on welding. With a new full tank of argon plus a back up, I looked forward to some serious progress... Day one, I finished the c-notches!

    Next I welded the air bag upper mounts. I also placed a heavy 2x3 to the rear of the frame. Although I will be placing supports across the top of the notches for the pumps to mount to, I figured that it couldn't hurt since I removed the cross member that the rear shocks absorbers mounted to.

    With the help of some friends, I was also able to get a battery 2 gauge wire ran to the rear as well as bought a new battery to support the addition of the pumps. I also cut out the rear corners of the trunk for rust repair. I finished but only managed to snap a shot of the cut out.

    My buddy Brent was not only kind enough to let me use his warehouse for the latest fab work, he also smashed out the majority of grinding and wire brush work on the trunk. After I finished the rear bag mounts, he commented that we finally made some noticeable progress by installing a shelf for his beer!

    Now that the power is to the rear and the frame can touch the earth, I hope to be installing the bags and 4 link next weekend. Oh, I also spent a few hours at the metal yard cutting my pre measured sections of 14 gauge steel and all the supports to finish the trunk after the link kit and bags are in.

    Very nice work, what kind of plans do you have in mind for the body, like customizing wize, I know the frenched lisence plate and shaved door handles but what else do you have in mind? Jim

    In response to future body plans I wasn't going to post that until after the suspension was done...
    But since the question came up:
    My idea is to keep everything subtle and use as much early era Cadillac parts but at the same time modern up the appearance to my liking. Example: I have changed out the side fender scoops to the 56' Cad and begun making LED turn signals and running lights on a pair of 54" Cad grill ends. I plan to use those lines with a billet grill that will be done tasteful (not like a late 90's mini truck). Also I will be chopping the convertible top just a little. (Around 2 - 3 inches) Plans for this are 90% done. This plus the drastic suspension drop should give it the appearance of a body section. Below is the first cuts I made into the grill ends and installed one turn signal on passenger side. These will be highly modified, but you can at least see where I started.

    50's era converts usually had an X member added to the frame to stiffen it.... Not sure if caddy did that. I remember having a convert on our frame lift,....forget opening doors.

    Good lookin out 'Squablow'. I actually was aware the year of the donor Buick but miss typed because my good friend Brent pictured above drives a 54' Buick that was built by John D'Augustino. I guess I was just used to saying the that year with that car!

Actually all Friday evening was wasted running around for small needed parts and could not have been more frustrating. I ended up Saturday working from 10am - 9am straight through no breaks. So the progress again was less than expected, but hey that's custom fab for ya...
    So I started by measuring the distance from the front leaf shackle to the center of the axle. The idea was to go with a trailing arm/4 link. I used 2X2&#8221; steel for the lowers with 1.5&#8221; hiems, and 1&#8221; round for the uppers.

original shackles. So I added steel to the frame as well as cut away and made new side mounting plates.

    Believe it or not, the above work took about 6 hours to get to this next step. I finally got the lowers in place!

    Great fab work. Those links look killer. I prefer heim joints over rubber bushed ends anyday. This is going to be a great cruiser man!

    In case your wondering what is going on in this picture, I temporarily hooked up all the electric 1/2" valves directly to the bags and after plumbing the tank, I cut slots in the sides of its shipping box and put it back in these to avoid scratches. I installed it and after 23 hours of break free work the suspension was operational.
