I have been a Cadillac guy but have found my first 30' Model A roadster that I have been looking for a long time now. Anyway I have a 53' Ford flathead and wanted to have a trans that would do good on the freeway and something that is not to hard to adapt to this flathead. I know many of you guys have done this a Billion times but I have not.

Any info on what makes a nice runner would be great! Also if I build this engine to basically stock with a bit of pep what rear end should I run? 9"? 8"? And what gears?
    Thanks!

8" ford rear is more than strong enough for a mild flathead. With an OD type trans - 3 spd w/od or 5spd - I personally would look at rear gears in the 3.7 range. I think the original '53 gears would have been maybe 3.9 or even 4.10 type, I know the similar Studebakers were.
