Maybe the pawl is broken off inside the trans?

no. its still intact. ive tried adjusting it until it doesnt move, lower the car from the hoist, and it can still be pushed while in park. you can feel it trying to hold, but does not. all the detents are correct, and goes to low/drive/reverse/ect. a
also when throttling it up in park, it tries to move...any clues?

ok, figured it out. removed pawl, and found edge was completely warn down. threw a bead of weld on it, and ground it back down-will test it out tomorrow.
    thanks for the input BGR...

Try replacing the thrust pad, trans mount and engine mounts. THEN adjust the trans links. The thrust pad, right in front of the torque-ball, and shaped like a "U" that got stepped on, locates everything for-and-aft, and if worn out will mess with the trans controle adjustments. Easy parts to find, and easy to replace.

    Hope it helps,
