Hey guys so I just bought a 51 and I need to replace the clutch. My issue is there’s some conflicting info on here and the internet. Do I need a 10” clutch or a 9 1/2”? And who has the best complete clutch kit?

I know most of you will say pull the trans and look however I can’t because my car in in the driveway and I can’t have it non operational for that long waiting for a clutch to come in.

    Thanks,
    George

  2. I've had real good luck with Fort Wayne Clutch and Driveline 800-258-8243. They sell complete clutch kits. They can help you with your clutch size question as well.

  3. Wilcap actually sells a really nice Merc clutch set up. no core needed, picked one up a few months ago for the 283 swap into my 39 on the factory 3 speed. Really nice guy to deal with, give them a call, and tell him what you need. he will be able to hook you up.

The problem with just ordering parts for our old cars is that they have been messed with for 50 plus years, and probably don't have the correct stock parts in them now. That is why you need to take it apart to find out what you have in there to start with. Then and only then can you get the correct parts the first time. Your results may very.

I hear ya however the one I bought was from the wife of the Ford dealership owner where it was parked since 1968. It’s literally a barn find. It has all the service records and everything so I know only stock replacements have been used.

This was the clutch and pressure plate out of my 51. I couldn’t find and new clutch kits when I did this a few months ago. I put a smaller Ford clutch disc in mine and reused the pressure plate. I was going to have my stuff rebuilt if it goes out. Hope this helps, there is nothing worse then ordering the wrong stuff.

George, I sure feel for you guys that live in an area that has so many rules, you can’t function.

Might be a simple solution to your problem. Jack it up, pull the transmission, move all the parts into the garage, let the car back down on the driveway. It will look like it’s operational. Then order your right parts. Then put them in.A lot of extra trouble, but may work.
