That is what I assumed you were doing at first, but I normally see people do that to keep straight posts, and got curious when I saw you were still going with slanted ones.
So you did that to keep the sail panels from getting too fat without having to extend the cat walk a lot?

Good lokin build! Curious why your not keeping the 51' back glass?

It may be too soon to tell, but it looks to me like they are keeping '51 rear glass.

I think that if you want to use the 54 Merc lenses so they look the best, you have to "pinch" the rear of the fender "fin." Doing so, narrows the fender just enough to make the 54 Merc lense fit and look the best.

Great job on the Merc- I'm a big fan of your shoebox as well. You've got a great eye and some awesome skills as a tin bender! Keep it up! I love '54 Merc taillights in shoeboxes and Mercs... and extending the quarter windows is a great thing- I didn't know people did that / how to do it so I'm excited to see how that all turns out!

And... subscribed. I can't miss out on this!

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas...I got back to the chop today and finally managed to wrestle the reproduction rubber seal in place...what a bitch. My dad helped me hold the rear window in place and ended up giving me a hand the rest of the day until the rear window was exactly where it will be, as well as getting the panel above the window in place :) More pics soon!

    take care,
    Rob

Awesome!!! I hope youre following in the footsteps of the clean, understaded look of that Merc in the poster you have on the wall.

  24. Did the rubber not fit everywhere or just in some particular spots?

Hi John, did you mean the rear window seal? It was just a really tight fit overall, but eventually it worked out.

  26. Just read the entire thread. Very nice work. Nice lines on the chop.

Nice build. Not quite enough chop for me but very good job on leaving the cat walk. Chops with no cat walk look real amateurish (is that a word?) to me. Nice job.

  30. Looks really good,Rob. Who's gonna do the finish work and paint?
