Now that's love! I could do that! I started looking for property on the outskirts of Austin right after my brother told me I could have his 80 year old barn.
Here's the thread with some cool shots of Larry's place. Don't get scared of the size of the thread, Larrys photos are right at the begining. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=80511&highlight=cigar+factory&showall=1
Oh yeah! I remember his building (and that incredible thread!). I thought you meant it actually had a car elevator. I agree though... A warehouse/factory building with a car elevator! Hell yes!!
Jesus...I wish. You know, this is kind of along the lines of a little real estate idea I have. Follow me on this one.... A housing development of nothing but 2 car garages wih second floor studio apartments. I'm calling it, "Fonzi Acres."
Oh yeah, I could see where my comment looked like that but I just meant a place like larry with a car elevator in it although Larry place just the way it is is perfect. I visited a shop once in downtown Mansfield OH that was a old brick car dealership with an elevator in it and I thought to myself how cool it would be to live in that..... in the outskirts of Detroit.
Believe it or not? Here in New Zealand there have been a number of real estate developments that are industrial units with living quarters up top - yes, designed with the gearhead in mind...
Woudn't your house reek?....exhaust smell, tire rubber, gas, dead critters,......Not that I don't like all those things......I just don't want to live in the smell.
Our new house was designed around cars(or so my wife says!!!) Double tandem plus I will be putting in a 4 post hoist soon to give total space for 5."Her car" is in another single car garage at the top of the block. Walk up a few stairs and you are in the rumpus room/bar.Glass walls look down into the garage so you can be at the bar having a drink and looking at the toys. A shame the Hudson is not here at the moment Guests always welcome
I believe Ferris Buehler's friend Cameron had this same setup going on. A house on a hill is simply no place to try to rewind an odometer. Otherwise, this a GREAT idea.
There is a house here that was built in the 50's that had a see-through garage, powered glass door and glass back wall. The driveway/garage floor was pink with big black polka dots. The original owners kept a pink 55-7 T-bird and a black Mark 1 in the garage for many years. It was really something to see. Unfortunately, someone let the condition of the house run down, and the cool garage just stands as an open carport at this point. The crazy driveway still looks good though. Another one of those things that really should be restored. I keep thinking that a good photo would come up of the place some day, but so far I haven't found one.
WOW! VERY cool place! I'm pals with John Taylor and will be visiting Brisbane one of these days real soon. I'd love to stop and check out your place in person.
I told my wife I wanted our garage to basically be a family room that I drive my car into and when it is clean, it basically is. I want to get it cleaned up enough now to get a pool table in by the car.
My garage had a one bedroom apartment built inside on the bottom, about a 30' X 30' space, the tenants said they could smell everything I was doing out there. behind that silver wall was the apartment I've been tearing the apartment out due to weak floors, moisture was trapped from being built on top of the concrete slab. It's a slow process due to my back and noncarpentry skills but there are times I wish I lived out there instead of the house..lol
I know John(33 Roadster) very well.See him at various runs. You should come over in June(Wintersun Coolangatta),or late September(Valla Park) or November(Yamba). There are many other activities on in different parts of the country.Give yourself a few weeks to really see the place. I hope to meet you when I am over for Bonneville in August
