1946 ford tudor sedan build

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by CHOPPED '46, Jan 15, 2011.

  1. hello

    I'm Jurgen from the netherlands
and this is my build tread.
    it's a 1946 ford tudor sedan.
I build it in my spare time,so it is gonna take a few years

this is the car when I bought it in spring 2009

the plan is to build it roughly up and then go for registration and duth papers (it has an US title)
the car must be 2/3 original at that time. the less customizing the better the chance for dutch papers.
after I got the papers I go for the complete restauration and channeling/topchop.

    I took the body off
    [IMG]

I removed the AMC Pacer front suspention thas was build under the chassis.

I also removed the original rear axle
    [IMG]

I bought a jaguar Xj frontclip and this wil fit perfectly under my chassis.

after I measured everything I made mountingplates so I can bolt it under the chassis.

    more progress later

  2. I almost completely rebuild the frontclip and made new upper shock mounts.

in the rear I mounted a 3rd gen trans am axle with posi.
the horizontal arms are the same width as the ford chassis
so I made some mounting brackets.

I also used the 3rd gen torque arm.

to eliminate sideways motion I used a watts linkage because in the future I want to mount airride and absolutely no sideways motion.

I made a bracket on the axle so I can always remove the diff cover
    [IMG]

because I want rear disc brakes I mounted disks from a BMW 5 series E39(reduced 1.5cm in diameter) and calipers that came from a audi 100.
remember this is europe and I have a job in the car parts business.

I had to relocate the springs to
    [IMG]

this is the rear view for now
    [IMG]

    that it for now

  3. than I began to mount the engine.
I bought an pontiac engine from a sideways crushed 2nd gen trans am complete with a TH350 and driveshaft.
there is not much room for everything
    [IMG]

because I did not have any room for the original engine mounts,I made the in front of the engine.(after I took the picture I mounted them with hardened bolts)

then I rolled the chassis outside and get the body inside my garage.

I couldn't mount the body on the chassis beca use the spare tire storage thing came against the rear suspention (upper shock mount)
    so I cutted it out
    [IMG]

    It fits perfect
    [IMG]

very low because I cutted 2 rings of the front springs
    [IMG]

me and my son testing the drivability
    [IMG]

  4. made a new firewall because the last "customizer'' that worked on the car totally ruinded it.

    smooth!

mounted a steering culomn from a chevy pickup ?

and a brakepedal + master cilinder from a mercedes
    [IMG]

    steershaft and manifold clearance

also welded jaguar splines at the lower u joint
    [IMG]

    some welding pics:

and suddenly its 2011 !!!! thats it for now.
I must upload new pics from my camera first.

Great work on a great car. She looks very solid other then the rockers and those are better then most.

I would suggest stiffening up the master cylinder. It looks like you use about 12 gauge sheet metal for the floors and I am assuming you used the same on the firewall. After a few hard presses on the brakes the firewall may want to tear. I have seen in mentioned before on other builds and I am just putting out a suggestion.

  12. to stiffen up the firewall I made a frame of square tubing behind it.
the mastercilinder is bolted directly on this frame.
    thanks for the suggestion.
    I post some pics later

  13. this is the frame I made.
on each end of the square tubing I welded a plate and tapped thread in it so I can bolt it from the outside. these bolts wil not be visible when the hood is closed.

  14. I also installed the rear fenders and the front inner and outer fender.

does anyone know why I have two different inner fenders (I have a second pair)
one inner fender has a hump towards the engine and the other doesn't. !!!

  15. I made a start with the frenched headlight kit I got with the car.
but I wasn't happy with the installation of the headlight in the bucket.
the mountinginstructions with the srews and springs doesn't work for me.

I bought 2 headlights from a volkswagen rabbit (first type).
these have a nice round mounting frame and they can easely be adjusted with srews.

the frames where a little to big for the buckets so I made them a little smaller and welded new nuts on it for the adjustment srews.

to mount the complete headlights and frames in the bucket I welded some nuts on the frame and drilled holes in the bucket so I can bolt it to the bucket. (pic's say more then words).

  16. I also made some extra spotwelds on the bucket because it almost fell apart. it was badly put together.

I've read good things about the jag front suspension swap. What yr/model jag did you use?

    -Shifter

  19. jaguar xj6 or xj12 series 2 or 3 (series 1 doesn't have ventilated disks)
serie 3 has an steeringrack like mine. serie 2 has the powersteering lines on the back.
you can also use your GM servopump.
your 5x4.75 chevy wheels fit also if you slightly trim the hub.
and it has 4 piston calipers.

over here you can get them for about 200-300 dollar complete with rack and pignon and brakes if you are lucky.

I also bought the wipermechanism from a xj series 3 they fit almost directly on my ford. (same width and cable driven. even my wiperarms fit on it)

Nice work Chopped46. What are the plans for the body?

  22. thanks for the nice reactions

I have a job in the car part business (I sell new car parts) so I have all the documentation if I'm looking for a part to fit. (and a very nice discount).
so I don't have to order much in the states or a speedshop.

  23. the car must go for a technical inspection at a station for traffic approval.
and it may not have to much modifications in our country.

when I have the dutch papers and registration I disassable the car.
    it's getting sandblasted completly
then I want to chop the roof like this:
    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=404597&highlight=chopped+sedan
and maybe I channel the body over the chassis.
and then a nice flat paintjob.

  28. I customized a jaguar wipermechanism to fit in the ford
    IMG_7868.JPG

I customized the wipermotor because the angle of bladesweep was to big.
