Hey guys I have a 40 Chevy coupe I believe it's called a master 85. It's a factory straight axle car. I'm wanting to put a late model gm steering column in it but having trouble figuring out what to do with the steering box/column. It still has the factory gear box on the frame and factory column in the car. The column is one solid pieceall the way into the box. I'm looking for suggestions on what to do to keep it as factory as possible but update the column. Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated

Hey Travis, I'm reworking the front end on a '40 Chevy gasser with a straight axle (Speedway tube) and disc brakes that I plan to drag race. The front axle installation was pretty much a complete mess when I bought the car last year. It had a reversed Corvair box mounted on the outside of the frame, and questionable welds everywhere. Anyway, I cut all of that out and completely re-engineered the entire front end. I installed a Saginaw 525 manual box with a shortened input shaft and 6" billet steel pitman arm (You can find just everything you need as far as steering boxes and related linkage at Borgeson). I incorporated a box mount into the original top hat frame and went with an Ididit chrome tilt column (USA made) with a 3.5" drop off the dash. The photos do not show the 1" spacers between the box/mount and I had not cut the drag link to length yet and re-installed the rod end. I'm working on installing the column at this point in time...
