1939 mercury front spring helper?

Has anyone seen something like this before? Old aftermarket ad on or home made. It's adjustable with a huge spring?

Agricultural but would work! Clever thought really.

 

I remember something similar in the old J C Whitney catalogs in the 50's, evidently cheaper to add a helper spring than do new leaves.
