I can't tell in your pics, but is the center bore on those wheels bigger or smaller than the ridge on the hub/drum assembly? The ridge indexes to the recess on the back of the wire wheel hub. If the center bore is smaller then the wheel can't sit flush on the hub, causing all sorts of problems. One of which being that the studs won't protrude enough to get a bite on. The other is that even with longer studs, since the back if the wheel isn't flush in the face if the hub, once you start tightening them down is will stress the wheel, possibly cracking it. If that is the problem, the only real solution here is a set of adaptors made to put steel wheels on A hubs (used to be common, but not so much anymore) and longer studs pressed into your hubs. Worked on cleaning up the frame today, came out pretty good. Hopefully engines out end of the week. Truck bed is going in for glass blasting. Pretty discouraged with the wheel issue. Seems my choices are have the center hole expanded 1/2 inch on the wheels I have so it will sit flush. By 16 wire wheels, change to juice brakes ether way money I do not have lol
It's seems flush but it's not there is a second bevel layer that stops it from sitting flush...not sure what to do now
Model A drums/hubs are not compatible with non wire wheels due to the wire wheel support ledge. You will need to switch out to hydraulic brakes and 1940 or later hubs/drums, or switch to Ford wire wheels, which came in 16, 17, 18, 19, and 21" sizes. Longer studs won't prevent the issue of the wheel not sitting flat against the hub, and those studs aren't simple to change. They are not a pressed in stud, but rather a swedged or swaged stud. If these are not original Ford wire wheels, I am not sure they will provide the support Carter mentioned previously. Adaptors may be required, or just get original wire wheels, 1935 16" Ford wire wheels. See below and other threads for a better explanation. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=823403
I don't know. You'd have to find out from the wheel manufacturer, but I'd guess no. Most new aftermarket wheels are made to fit flat hub/drum faces. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Now thinking to move for juice brakes , so using my stock bnajo rear end and front set up what's the ideal brakes to look for?
Just found and read through your thread Tedders. Good work. I like the direction you are going. I have done similar with a 30 Tudor. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=749479 Mine wasnt as hard to get apart and I didnt have to go through as many headaches as you have, I feel for you though, I have been there before on other projects. As a fellow Canuck I find the Signage on the door intriguing. Very cool. Time to start looking up some history on this old girl. Keep up the great work. Jordan
To any newbie like myself in Canada who cannot afford soda blast, dip etc, wire wheel alone does not work, paint stripper from crap tire does not work, wire wheel and stripper...work well but it's a process and a half.
Due to the friends made and help received I had a case of the guilts..then became Alliance Member...feel much better
Was successful in stripping off the old paint on the cab, she will be going in mid week to have the engine/tranny pulled for cleaning and paint. Torn between painting her flat dark blue or flat reddish brown.. Still on the list, clean off the rest of the frame and paint, still working on degreasing the steering box and both axles/suspension...guy went crazy with the grease gun. I am hoping everything is in good shape under all that grease. Once she comes back from engine cleaning/paint pull the front end fix cracks in the cross support ship off axle, perches, steering arms to Joe for drop and modifications. Picked up my 2inch chopped windshield and posts today, I have a mallory coming from GMC bubba, and I am happy to say I found wheels!! Also have an intake, headers, stromberg small logo 97 on route. Will work on removing the surface rust and paint off the truck bed well the rest of her is away. Exciting to think I will begin constructing instead of destructing soon.
nice 35 wires! THAT IS SWEET those are gonna be perfect. Didn't you say the tires were 15 inch tho? those wires are 16.... that intake is awesome!
