Damn right, if you are a MSRA member and preregister it's $30 for 3 days. That's why it draws close to 12,000 cars every year...

I think Joe & 65 Rivi are the closest to the truth.

When someone complains or boycotts a show, the promoters are winning just as much as we are.

The point of charging $150 for a car entry is to specifically exclude certain types of people and their cars. It's the same reason that Disneyland charges so much in comparison to Six Flags. It isn't necessarily demand. It's a way to control who enters. It's also the same reason you normally don't see a regular Joe Blow buying a membership to the local country club.

This, of course, is not meant to discount the cost of entertainment in today's world. Costs are outrageous. The insurance alone is cost prohibitive for social gatherings of almost any type.

The car owners will simply choose to do what they want. Those who can or want to attend a $150 show will still do so. Oddly enough, maybe some people will sign-up just because of the higher price, recognizing that the show will be somewhat exclusive.

    It is what it is.

The Nifty Fifty's Car Club, puts on a cruise-in every Sat. night in the Forest Brook area of north Houston. They do not charge anything for anyone, although they do sometimes request donations to assist with various expenses. They do this for six or seven months of the year and consistantly have two/four hundred cars show up every Sat. Not counting the hundreds of spectators. I believe it's all pre 74/75 year models. No drama, no trophies, no charges, just alot of like minded people enjoying a lot of great cars. Rats to check book, and everything in between.

  7. Did they cancel Hot August Nights in Long Beach? If so, where did they post the cancel?

There have always been 2 types of shows. Your shows and their shows.
You know who you are, who are they.
They would be the professionals. The guys who own shops, build cars, sell parts to the masses. Them.
The guys who build the cars want to have a high profile show, that costs money. So they pay a high fee. In the end it's worth it for them, they get exposure, they deduct it as an add fee.
You can clearly see this at almost all of the shows, there's a pro built section sort of separated from the regular guys section. They don't want you bumping into the show piece, can't sell product with a dented car.
The fee in a sense promotes a bit of exclusivity. See a lot of Bentleys in the drive thru at Che Mc Donalds do you? Nope.
Nor will you see a lot of high polish statements of build capability at a less expensive entry show. There's just not a market for the package.
No one will just say they don't want you, but they can raise the price to an amount that questions your sensibilities. And so you don't go with your car.

If you feel bad about this don't. There are plenty of affordable shows to go to. Go to those instead. You'll have a better time. Most of those high buck shows the guys are so busy constantly cleaning and dolling that you can't speak to them anyways.

Still nice to attend one every now and then though.

Several years ago, I drove to Reno for HAN (in my 1980 Pinto wagon.) Stayed for free at a relative's house, went to everything, saw all the cars and had a great time. Casinos got some of my money but the HAN promoters didn't.

Sweetie, I got a better one for you. The Frog Follies, 3 days, $15, outstanding colored t-Shirt, nice goody bag, Saturday dinner, Friday night band, breakfast Sunday morning, and the koolest dash plaque anywhere. Oh, did I say a huge swapemeet, air conditioned ladies world, and sponsoring club runs the concessions with cheap-cheap vittles, and the biggest is that they give most of it every year to a local charity. Now allyall, top that one.

This ridiculous statement might make some sense if it were VENDORS bitching about the cost......but its not. Its the car owners who have put so much time, blood, sweat, and money into their rides that are the majority of people "bitching". And answer me this...how are the car owners using the "goods and services" of a car show? The only service rendered from the car show is from the vendor who paid too much to cook your overpriced $4 hot dog. I know it is no easy task to set up a successful show, but I dont care what "bills" you tally up-it doesnt justify a $150 price tag to make someone else some cash.

  15. YEH...what she said !!!! What a great time!! Also Jalopyrama in October is only $12.00 ! They don't get any better than these two!

Boy remember when you used to get "goodie bags" full of more RTV and other car products than the registration cost?? Man those were the days! These days I actually have to buy my RTV - what a drag!!! ;-)

I'm no spring chicken and have been to way too many car shows, paid and free.
What the guy says above is the absolute best thing I've ever encountered.
Totally free for specatators, $5 for cars to show--and that's only because the shopping center's liability requires cops, etc. Super music, 400-600 cars most nights, tons of specators, great folks and no trouble ever.
YET, i hear some guys still bitch and some try to sneak in--with their 80K rides.
    Go figure.

There was a show in RI that literally priced itself out of business!! They use to charge a "fair" price & give you a T shirt( it was about 3/4 of a mile of cars!!), then it kept going up, but they gave you a pull over collared shirt (BFD!!) Now they raised the price thru the roof & if they get 10 cars its alot!!Don't these promoters do the math!!
Your best bet is to not go, boycott it! Ya had to learn something from the "60's"!!lol

Okay we had our show this last Saturday, the "Classic Rods for Mending Hearts" car show benefiting the American Heart Association at Victorian Square in Sparks NV.

We tried very hard to keep it FREE REGISTRATION!!!
NO entry fee for car owners, No fee for spectators, No fee for vendors,
and FREE music by 3 live bands at the show!
Blue Haven, Rattlesnakes Guns N Lawyers, and Elektric Rodeo.

And it was a huge success!!!

Everyone had a great time, participants loved it, vendors made money,
and we were able to give a BIG check to the American Heart Association!

    So it can be done!

And let's not forget the accountant and tax work after the show to deal with all of it.

You hit the nail on the head: "their BUSINESS." When you can stroll into Dairy Queen, the local body shop or movie theater and use their goods and services without paying for it, you'll have a legitimate bitch.

Until then, you're just whining. Do us a favor and stay home."

I was the "Promoter" for the car show put on by my church for 10 years. It was all volunteer to raise money for charitable programs. I got blind siding angry telephone calls once in a while from people who wanted me to pay them to put their car in the show. I saw the people park along the street and put "For Sale" signs on their cars. I met "Gold Chainers". At least 90 percent of the people who brought their cars were decent people you enjoyed being around.
Prior to that I was involved in a big club probably most of the people have heard of. I allegedly had a position of importance but was powerless trying to control a group who "took the money and ran" that was raised by the big car show put on by the group.
No, I won't pay big money to put my car in a for profit car show but those people probably wouldn't want my low buck car there anyway.

I've only paid to get into 3 car shows, and the proceeds went to charity. I've been to the Detroit Autorama (club paid and decided which cars went), the Woodward Dream Cruise and numerous shows here in FL. Heck, in FL there is a show SOMEWHERE just about everyday. It could be a city that's trying to draw people into their town or a small restaurant trying to draw customers. $150 for a car show? No other way to say it, it's f'in insane...

Quire right. Congratulations on your show. Nobody puts on a show month after month. You'd just be drawing the same cars and crowd-on a diminishing basis. We've got a monthly cruise in around here, but it's mostly the same bunch just wanting to hang out, not a show. Good luck in the future, but, I expect, that if you were to run 10 successful shows, Brad54 would want you to run 20. :)

    Not at all.

YOU are the one who brought this back up to the top, with the "IT CAN BE DONE" post, and called me out specifically and told me to read all the positive posts congratulating you.

    I was serious: Congrats.

And I was also serious when I said "Now do it again. And do another one the next month."

It becomes a whole different animal when you put on a show regularly.

What you don't seem to grasp is that I LOVE when people go out, start something, and are successful at it.

What I don't like is all the whiners bitching when someone else with initiative goes out and spends their time, their energy and their money to launch ANY kind of venture. And I can't stand it when the whiners all say the ones with initiative should work for free... THEY don't show up at work and not expect to get paid, so why would they want someone else to? Nobody is forcing people to attend a car show or swap meet... if you don't want to pay the entry fee, it's just like any other product: don't buy it.

I'm glad you had a good show, and I'd be the first to buy you a beer for it.

I do. NE Georgia Swap Meet, held the first Saturday of every month, March thru November.

So does Goodguys, the World Of Wheels and NSRA. Just not in the same city.
