Technical 11” brake upgrade on small bearing rearend

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by hotrodA, Feb 13, 2021.

  1. I have a small bearing 9” Bronco rear with 10” brakes under my 41 pickup.
It needs everything as far as rear brakes.
Can 11” brakes be used if the backing plate mounting holes are filled and redrilled to the small pattern? Is there material enough to do this?
Axles (5x5-1/2) would stay the same, so offset would have to match.
I don’t have any 11” brakes to measure.
    Thanks!

Check Roadster Supply, they show small bearing 11 inch brakes, They're for a 2.50 bearing offset. You could look for 60-64 Ford big car small bearing brakes if you have the 2.36 offset. I've use them in the past on 57-59 Ford rear ends to get 11X2.25 brakes

  5. Unfortunately, the Roadster Supply shows kit for small bearing has only 5x4-1/2 BC.
    Bronco is 5x5-1/2 BC.
Guess a phone call is in order.

  7. Yes you can.

I have 11" Torino brakes in the garage, they are actually for a small bearing rear. The bolted right up to my small bearing housing. But yes you can change the bolt pattern and run them, I have done that too.

Depending on your front brakes, as in if you have disc on the front I don't see any need to run a larger drum rear unless your carrying alot of weight or pulling trailers...

I've got an 8 inch Maverick rear in my 40 coupe with 10 inch brakes and the large Super Bell Super Stoppers on the front with an 8 inch dual booster, prop valve, residual valves and it stops great.

  10. Certain years of the early Broncos had an 11 inch brake, I'm using 3 of these rear ends and one of them has 11 inch brakes, the wheel cylinders are also different between the 11's and 10's

A 41 pickup would tend to be light in the rear. I would think 10 inch brakes would work fine, maybe even be preferred.

  12. Thanks for all the suggestions. Lots to consider.
Leaving the 10” alone, with all new bits is probably the way to go.
My 40 coupe has disc on front and Maverick 10” rear, and stops fine.

Dang hot rodder (me) always wanting to change things. Leave well enough alone.
