I use oxalic acid. It doesnt attack anything except rust so you can leave the panels in for as long as you like. It seems to coat the panel too...
Similer problem with mine although I have a 12v dynamo coil and regulator set up the coil always runs really hot and I sometimes lose ignition....
Presume you have already done this but don't do anything till you have dosed the bores with oil and let it soak for a few days before you even try...
