Man that motor looks awesome

 

Do you farm anything out at all ? Can I ask what your profession is? I'm gonna guess heavy equipment mechanic. Seems like they can do most anything. Tommy.

 

I'm doing most of this one my self. I don't have a profession at the moment...my wife supports us. I'm a mechanical engineer by training, I worked for several years in the 1980s at Ft Huachuca doing the engineering for installing large satellite earth terminals. Then I opened an automotive shop, and that's the only work I've done since.

I did get some help with the bodywork, but I can do it all myself if I have to (just not as quickly/well)

Man... I didn't realize that was you in Drag Week! I was following it online and I only know you as squirrel and the car wasn't in its gasser state. (still in primer) I need to hang out here more often!

I've been messing with the engine. I think I have all the parts figured out to get the heads assembled...I ended up ordering some different springs, now the valves are too long, so I'm going to get some offset keepers and shims to get the installed height where it should be. Hopefully the rocker geometry will be ok. I also retarded the cam two degrees...I need to get some more stuff to make a better check of the valve to piston clearance, to make sure it's ok before I get everything buttoned up.

I dropped the short block and transmission into the car. The steering clearance was a concern, looks like it will fit OK. The cutout in the Moroso pan looks like it was made for this straight axle swap.

 

Awesome! I have been following this right from the beginning and now I have a need to build my own 60's Gasser!

 

Better add a bump stop to that axle so when it comes down from a wheelie the drag link doesn't hit!

 

Yeah, that's in the plans too. I don't have the front shock mounts all figured out yet, either.

 

Very nice! Keep up the good work, I am planning a trip to Tulsa already to see it in action. Can't wait.

thanks! The heads will be bare aluminum. They're from 1970....I hope they still work.

Back to work. I put the blower back together, it still turns, which is a pleasant surprise. I got to make a new bracket, to mount the idler pulley, the one I had was a bit too modern. I"m also trying to figure out the location for the remote thermostat housing, it wants to be where the alternator is, so I may move the alternator down low.

 

Damn that thing looks bad ass

Thanks! I've been piddling around with little stuff...I'm getting stuff done, but there's so much more to do. I have to mount shocks, plumb brakes, plumb fuel, finish the cage and paint it, start on the wiring, do more body/paint work on the doors and fenders and trunk, get some windows in it, build the exhaust, etc. Plan to haul it up to the show a the Tucson Dragway reunion at Southwest International Raceway in two weeks. I don't know if it'll be running, but it should be mostly put together.

Worked on the cage a bit more, all done except one door bar, which will make getting inside to work on other stuff more of a pain. I guess it's time, though. After I weld that in, I can paint the cage, then install the windshield.

I keep putting parts on the engine. And there's still so much more to do! I'm going to use an original gauge cluster, I need to restore it. I did get the ignition and light switches cleaned up and installed, and the all important cigar lighter socket. Gotta keep the phone charged, you know.

 

are you going to put in a knee bar. that really adds strength to the cage. i like the sill bars. I'm going to put some in my car.

 

No dash bar. I'm trying to keep weight down, and only adding what's needed per the rules. The firewall is still completely stock, so I don't need the dash bar. The sill bars are required because of the modified floor.

 

Any reason you didn't use a swing out door bar? I thought those were legal

 

Yeah, this car is just about going fast. No creature comforts.
