here some pics of the damage .... now looking for a rebuild kit + a new crankshaft. i could go for a re grind, but for the same money i can order a new one
You don't show the bearings, but that doesn't look like thin oil damage, it looks like dirt in the oil. Gas contaminated oil would scuff the bearing surfaces evenly, yours are only scuffed at the oil hole. Doesn't matter though, it always sucks to lose a new engine!
Wrong! 4bt Cummins it what it should have, after all it is a TRUCK not a car! But it is a bitchen ride!!
took the engine totaly apart today inspected and cleaned all the parts the cam shaft did not got damaged just ordered the needed parts. rebuild crankshaft, rod, main and cam bearings, oil pump, pistons & rings timing set and full gasket set now sit back and wait for it to arrive
Beautiful truck, you sir are very talented, enjoyed reading this thread Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I once without realising it ran a 272 Ford with about 2 gallons of gasoline mixed with the oil in the sump.(Long story involving trying to tow-start the F100 for a couple of miles -and the float in the carby being stuck down) After dumping the oil-fuel mix and puting new oil in (never thought to change the filter...) it ran for years with no problems.
i'm surprised that the gas would do so much damage, usually as long as there is something flowing through it will be a while before there is damage Sent from my DROID4 using Tapatalk
man such a sinking feeling though to take stuff apart again. when i built my car it didnt leave the shop without mechanical oil pressure & coolant+trans temp gauge Sent from my DROID4 using Tapatalk
at the first start up i checked and had oil pressure, i am not sure its caused by the fuel, it could also be that the damage started way earlier
Sander - You bring up a good point. Did you get the engine from a reliable source? Did it seem like a good deal? Is it possible someone sold you that engine with the damage already started? Still an awesome build! Good luck !!!
It's hard to say what caused it. Those are great engines but there are so many of them made there is bound to be failures. I am in GMC and Chevy dealers once a week and there are always some torn down. Friday I was talking with a tech who is rebuilding a LS7 (those are originally hand built in a seperate GM facilityand signed by the builder) the engine in question only has 5,000 miles on it they pulled it apart for a noise, found no evidence of the cause re-placed the bearings that did not fix the noise so now they are replacing just about everything. sometimes there is no explanation. your truck is still the best thing on here hands down.
ok some update on the engine rebuild yesterday 99% of the parts arrived from the states. got a remanufactured crankshaft (as it was cheaper and faster ) and new main, rod and cam bearings pistons and rings oil pump timing set full gasket set only waiting for new cilinder head bolts already got the crank , cam and pistons in place honed the cilinder bores and installed the pistons
Yes i did . i didnt want to take the risk in not replacing it . And discover it was The or one off the causes And its in a not so easy accesable location as wel Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
intalled the engine without heads first and lowered the Coe back on the Ground and then installed heads ,intake and the rest of the stuff, and got the engine running again (now including oil pressure ). then my Dad has been creative and added some text to the sides
Corvettesander, if you get off the boat in New York headed for Kansas, a little side trip to Wisconsin wouldn't be very far out of your way. LOL
I'm thinking personal visits to everyone watching this build in the states haha. Iowa is between Wisconsin and Kansas lol Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
